F&G Commission Denies Proposed Ban on Hunting Tomales Bay ER

Yesterday, the California Fish and Game Commission refused to consider a proposed ban on waterfowl hunting on the Tomales Bay Ecological Reserve.  California Waterfowl, as well as a number of local hunters and other allied sporting groups, spoke out against the proposal at the Commission's meeting in Santa Rosa.

Citing public safety, noise and the protection of wildlife using an adjacent sanctuary, the group Action Tomales Bay http://www.actiontomalesbay.org/index.html and a number of animal rights groups had asked the Commission to close all of the 483-acre Tomales Bay Ecological Reserve to waterfowl hunting.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW)-managed area http://www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/er/region3/tomales.html is one of the few remaining public waterfowl hunting areas in Marin County, and one of the last places within Tomales Bay where hunting still occurs.

California Waterfowl's testimony focused on the importance of the ecological reserve to maintaining local waterfowl hunting traditions, the excellent safety record of hunting and the lack of supporting science for the proposal, amongst other arguments.

The Commission vote was 4-0, with Commissioners' Jim Kellogg and Richard Rogers voicing particular support for maintaining waterfowl hunting at the area.
