Post Season Pintail Banding Continues
Our Post Season Pintail Banding Program has moved on to northeastern California and the Lower Klamath NWR. Normally crews follow the cold temps and the birds, but this season has been mostly mild so far, making it tough to get birds on baited trap sites.
Crews have had two capture events resulting in 414 total pintail and 14 wigeon banded and released. Earlier this week, they also had one recapture from a hen pintail originally banded in the Sacramento Valley on February 22nd of this year. Our project goal of 1,000 pintail has been met but crews may attempt a few more captures before the program wraps up. |

California Waterfowl's spring hunt program deadline is TODAY, March 15 at 10:00 p.m. for all hunts taking place this month. These turkey and pig hunts take place from Redding, to King City. Hunt applications are $4 each, and in order to give every applicant an equal opportunity to participate in the Hunt Program, applicants are only allowed to apply once per hunting opportunity.

CWA Hosts Legislative Wetlands Tour, Lobby Day
On Tuesday, California Waterfowl and its partners hosted a tour of Yolo Basin wetlands and rice fields for State Legislators, their staff and other public officials. We hoped to educate decision makers about waterfowl and wetland management and the many challenges facing them in the Yolo Bypass and Delta. Tour stops included the Yolo Wildlife Area, Knaggs Ranch, the Fremont Weir and included a discussion of flood control and ecosystem restoration issues. About 40 people participated in the day's events, which was kicked off by introductory remarks by State Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis).
On Wednesday, CWA also held its annual educational outreach day at the State Capitol. Dozens of meetings were held with State Legislators and their staff to highlight the importance of waterfowl hunting to wetland conservation, as well as discuss bills currently pending before the State Legislature-including a number of gun control measures that impact sporting arms/ammunition.
Later this month, State Legislators will begin their initial policy committee hearings on the thousands of bills that have so far been introduced at the Capitol, as well as continue ongoing budget hearings for the Department of Fish and Wildlife and other state agencies. |

CWA End of Season Public Land Hunters Survey Complete
California Waterfowl has released the results of its End of Season Public Land Hunters Survey (click here for complete results). The information will be used by CWA to better represent the interests of its members when providing input to the Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife (USFWS) on the administration of public hunt programs.
Approximately 800 respondents participated in the electronic survey, which was available during January and February on CWA's website, hunter forums, our Facebook page and other locations. The survey represents a sampling of public land hunters' views on certain hunt program issues, and is only one of several ways that we annually gather input on hunter preferences.
In the future, we hope to work with both DFW and USFWS on expanding the survey to garner greater hunter input, such as using the Automated License Data System (ALDS) to more specifically target the views of those who submit reservation applications and/or purchase passes for waterfowl and other gamebird hunting purposes. |
