July 19th, 2014 - The Humors
Strauss: Pizzicato Polka,
Shostakovich - 1st Piano Concerto
Alexandre Moutouzkine, Pianist
-Intermission-
Beethoven - Symphony #1
Our July program explores three very different kinds of humor. From the elegant, coy flirtations of Strauss' Polka to Shostakovich's witty sarcasms and parodies, the program grabs at us from many angles. We can't resist closing with Beethoven, as Shostakovich quotes him in the concerto repeatedly. In the case of the First Symphony, humor somehow becomes a mixture of the powerful, the good natured, and the wildly energetic, to create a marvel for the ear and heart.

August 16th, 2014 - Go The Distance
Verdi - I Vespri Siciliani Overture
Borodin - Steppes of Central Asia
Sibelius - Finlandia
-Intermission-
Brahms - Caroline Goulding, Violin
In August, we take you the distance. Verdi's passionate, tragic, and lyrical overture takes us to Sicily in the 13th century as Italy rebelled against the French. Further away still are the haunting, nomadic steppes of central Asia, portrayed with incredible Romanticism, yearning melodies, and exotic harmonies by Borodin. Sibelius gives us the bracing sharp-edged sounds of the North, tempered by a warm-hearted song of destiny. With Brahms; concerto the realms become truly metaphysical as he takes us on a powerful, sublime journey for the soul across the distances no longer measurable.
