April 2014

Goal
The goal of the Piscataquis & Penobscot Farming Newsletter is to provide timely information on the production and marketing of crops and livestock grown in central Maine.  Upcoming events and programs of interest will also be included.
Mission
University of Maine Cooperative Extension is the major educational outreach program of the University of Maine, with offices statewide.  UMaine Extension provides Maine people with research-based educational programs to help them live fuller, more productive lives.
Local Weather Anytime
Many farming activities are driven by the weather. Our local National Weather Service in Caribou has meteorologists on staff 24 hours a day. They are willing to talk with you about rain predictions for your town. Give them a call at 492-0180. Or check out their online detailed maps at Weather

The Maine Highlands Farmers and UMaine Extension are sponsoring the free program titled "Alternative Fuels Available to Farms and the Transportation Industry."

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv)
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus was first detected in the U.S. in May 2013 and has since spread to at least 26 states. The link below connects with the National Pork Board fact sheet on PEDv. Although PEDv has not yet been detected in Maine, the State has recently imposed a new requirement for swine entering the state. The following statement must be included on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection: "
To the best of my knowledge, swine represented on this certificate have not originated from premises known to be affected by Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv), and have not been exposed to PEDv within the last 30 days."

USDA Enhances Farm Storage Facility Loan Program
Small & medium sized farm operations, and specialty crop fruit & vegetable growers, now have access to low-interest loans for capital purchases of supplies (sorting bins, wash stations & other food safety-related equipment.) Also, funds can be used to build or upgrade permanent facilities to store commodities such as grains, hay, renewable biomass commodities, fruits & vegetables. Qualified facilities include grain bins, hay barns and cold storage facilities for fruits and vegetables. FMI go to www.fsa.usda.gov or your county FSA office.
 Food Hubs: Solving Local

The nationwide growth of regional food systems takes another forward step with the release of the Wallace Center report "Food Hubs: Solving Local" The report presents five case studies that show how small-farm aggregators and food retailers and distributors are teaming up to bring local food into larger-scale wholesale channels. Known as regional food hubs, the small-farm aggregators are helping industry partners meet growing consumer demand for food that comes with local economic, environmental, and social benefits.

The key finding is that food hub partnerships enable industry innovators to pull safe and reliable quantities of small-volume product through large-volume wholesale channels. Hubs also help define "local" by building market bridges between community-based interests and larger commercial outlets.

Hubs can be the scaling up strategy for small farms.

Sheep & Goat Producers Prepare for Ethnic Holidays in 2014

Sheep and goat producers can gain a significant benefit if they plan their breeding to coincide with an ethnic holiday (or religious observance.) In the fall of 2013 three University Extension systems partnered to help sheep and goat growers address this opportunity. Maine, Maryland & Ohio received funding from the American Sheep Industry Association to develop a series of webinars on marketing lamb to ethnic consumers. It was presented in winter of 2013 and is available by archived webinar at this site.

Dick Brzozowski, Small Ruminant Specialist with the UMaine Extension has developed a template for producers to use to develop their ethnic marketing strategy. These resources are available at this site. http://umaine.edu/livestock/sheep/ethnic-marketing-of-lamb-and-mutton/resources/

Putting a Hand on Them: How to Tell When Your Lamb is Ready to Butcher

If you raise lambs, you know the importance of harvesting your animals at exactly the right time. Lambs that are over- or under-finished will produce meat that is less desirable to consumers. Mastering the ability to determine when your lambs are correctly finished at 0.20 to 0.25 inch of back fat can result in a superior product in the marketplace, one that surpasses your competitors and creates demand among consumers. This brief tip sheet tells you how. For those raising meat for their own consumption, this video will answer the question, "When is my lamb ready to be butchered?" This  2-page factsheet is available at National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service. There is an accompanying video showing this technique.

Farmers Market with canopies Dover Cove Farmers' Market
Dover Cove Farmers' Market is looking for new vendors! We have been located at the busy and highly visible corner of South St. (Route 7 toward Dexter/Newport) and Pine St. for two years, and we have plenty of room to include more farmers and local food producers.
Our market runs from the end of May to the end of October on Tuesdays 2-6, and Saturdays 9-1. Currently, 7 farms/producers participate on one or both days each week. We have volunteers who process credit/debit and SNAP/EBT cards, as well as provide customer service, education, and other supports for the market.
Besides including more vendors, our plans for growing the market include increasing outreach to allied community organizations and businesses, making Dover Cove Farmers' Market a highlight of downtown Dover-Foxcroft, and increasing consumer engagement.
Member vendors pay $25 yearly dues, and $3 per market day they participate. Maine Department of Agriculture licences and insurance are required. Prospective members must be approved by a majority of current members.
Interested in becoming part of our market? Contact Jackie Robinson at  jackieblue750@yahoo.com
