SARE Farmer / Grower Grants
How Can I Get One?
One of the most common questions about farming that comes into the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Office in Piscataquis County is "How can I get a grant to help me farm?"  Tom Malloy, Outreach Coordinator at the University of Maine for Northeast SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) will be coming to the next Maine Highlands Farmers Meeting on Thursday, October 10th at 7 pm at the Piscataquis County Extension Office to talk about how farmers can get a grant from the SARE program to help with their farm.

Malloy will discuss some successful grants that farmers in Maine have received and what they have been able to do with the extra funds.

Some recent projects include pasturing hogs on field peas and barley, sunflowers for oil and feed, as well as winter-hardy bees. Many times the farmer/grower grant is about researching a new and different way of doing something on the farm. SARE provides some funding and the farmer provides the sweat equity.

All are invited to attend this free session. The Maine Highlands Farmers will hold a business meeting after the session to discuss their website and other marketing outlets. All are welcome to sit in on this discussion too.

For more information contact Donna Coffin, Extension Educator, at 207-564-3301 or in Maine 1-800-287-1491 or donna.coffin@maine.edu

About the Maine Highlands Farmers:

The Maine Highlands Farmers organization was organized to promote locally grown and raised products in the communities located in the Maine Highlands region of Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Somerset Counties.  They actively seek to identify and develop new markets to enhance farmer to community relationships and increase farm revenues.

Monthly meetings offer educational opportunities for area farmers to learn about rules and regulations, marketing strategies, expanding value added products, and business growth and development. www.mainehighlandsfarmers.com

Christmas Tree Pruning Demonstration at the Law Farm

Toby Hall will be leading a Christmas Tree Pruning Demonstration at Law Farm property in Dover-Foxcroft on Tuesday, October 15th from 9:00AM to Noon. Individuals who would like to attend the demonstration to learn about pruning techniques, and also have a hands-on opportunity to practice this skill, are welcome to join Toby and additional members of the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) as they work to re-shape the balsam fir on the farm.

According to Hall, "Natural pruning is used for fir trees that are meant to have ornaments on them. Open spaces are created between the branches. This allows Christmas Tree decorations to really show through the branches." Toby has assisted the PCSWCD by pruning about 50 trees so far, and it is the goal of the conservation district to prune the remaining trees this fall. The fir trees on the Law Farm were originally planted by Steve Law and area school children as part of the Kids and Trees program.

All are welcome to join the PCSWCD at this event, and are asked to contact the PCSWCD by Friday, October 11th to pre-register. The Law Farm is located at 477 Milo Road and parking for the workshop is in the farm parking area on the Lee Cemetery Road. Please notify Lynn Lubas, PCSWCD Technical Coordinator, if you need an accommodation. For more information and to pre-register, please email info@piscataquisswcd.org, call 564-2321, Extension 3 or stop into the PCSWCD at the USDA Service Center, Pine Crest Business Park, 42 Engdahl Drive, Dover-Foxcroft.

Housing & Equipment Featured at Sheep & Goat Seminar!

University of Maine Cooperative Extension will present a day-long Maine Sheep & Goat Housing and Equipment Seminar on October 19, 2013. The UMaine Extension seminar is offered in cooperation with the Maine Sheep Breeders Association, the Boer Goat Breeders of Maine and regional dairy goat associations of Maine.

The seminar, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield, Maine, will be led by Professor John Porter from the University of New Hampshire. In addition, a panel of farmers will present what works for them and their livestock.

"Housing is an important consideration for sheep or goat producers," says UMaine Extension Poultry and Small Ruminant Specialist Richard Brzozowski. "Livestock facilities should be well designed for animal comfort, easy cleaning and efficient management. Multiuse of housing should also be considered. Producers who participate in this one-day seminar will learn how to design or adapt their facilities with profitability in mind."

The $35 per-person fee includes a reference notebook, refreshments, and a hot lunch featuring Maine lamb. Each participating farm will receive a resource notebook including the Midwest Plan Service publication Sheep Housing and Equipment Handbook and other educational materials.
