INGLENOOK Cask 2011

Vinous - Antonio Galloni

90 POINTS Vinous

"Inglenook's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask presents a distinctly Old World profile. Sweet tobacco, cedar, savory herbs, plums and black cherries are some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. This pretty, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent choice for drinking over the next decade or so. Readers should expect a lithe, feminine wine built on aromatics, nuance and understatement." Antonio Galloni, December 2014

Tasting Notes

Subtle and round on the palate, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask offers fragrant notes of boysenberries, cherries, black currant and leather. Flavor intensity increases on the mid-palate with beautiful impressions of red fruits, spices, and coffee. This vintage bestows a supple texture with soft tannins and smooth, even transitions, giving it a particularly elegant style.

About Philippe Bascaules
Phillippe Bascaules
General Manager - Phillipe Bascaules

Personally chosen by Francis Ford Coppola, renowned French winemaker Philippe Bascaules came to Napa from Bordeaux in 2011 to become General Manager of the great American wine estate, Inglenook.

Born and bred in the South-West of France, Bascaules was a gifted student with a love of nature that ultimately inspired his passion for œnology. In 1990, after receiving a degree in Agricultural Engineering, with a specialty in œnology, from Montpellier University in France, Bascaules began his career as assistant to the Estate Director at the legendary Château Margaux, one of France's five First Growth Bordeaux estates. Bascaules became Estate Director in 2000, overseeing viticulture and vinification and working alongside renowned General Manager, Paul Pontallier.

Bascaules' experience of making some of the world's most critically acclaimed wines has taught him the importance of respecting the heritage of a great 'terroir.' His philosophy is unassuming and clear-cut: "I prefer to know, rather than believe. I am not here to make changes just for the sake of it; I want to know that any changes I implement will improve the wine. Everything is a question of balance, but preserving elegance is essential. In my opinion, a 'grand vin' should be more than just sensational, it should also evoke emotion."

At Inglenook, Bascaules now leads a team of talented winemaking professionals dedicated to Coppola's vision of making Inglenook the finest New World estate wine produced in the Old World style. In 1890, founder Gustave Niebaum stated that Inglenook would one day "produce the finest wines, to equal and excel the most famous vintages of Europe." Over a century later, Coppola and Bascaules proudly continue the Inglenook legacy.

About the Inglenook Estate
Inglenook Estate - Aerial

Founded in the 1880's by a successful Finish sea Captain, Gustave Niebaum, Inglenook Estate in Rutherford California was once the most highly regarded of the earliest, great Napa Valley estate wineries.  Over the years the estate passed through the hands of Niebaum's descendants and the family started to sell off plots of the historic homestead.

Even the proud name was put on the market in 1964 and sold to a corporation as merely a brand name.  But in 1975, Francis Ford Coppola purchased the largest parcel of the land including the Captain's old home.  The idea was to have a place close to his production company in San Francisco where his family could live and maybe make a bit of wine, like he had done with his father and grandfather (both Italian immigrants to America) in the basement of their New York apartment when he was a kid.  Through the ups and downs of his movie making career a new dream emerged.  Egged on by Napa neighbors like Robert Mondavi, Coppola soon became intent on restoring the estate to its former glory.  Indeed the 1941 Cabernet Sauvignon has consistently scored 100 point and is still venerated as one of the all time best wines to be made in the new world.  Piece by piece the estate was reassembled.

Finally, nearly forty years later and at significant financial cost, Coppola realized his dream of re-acquiring the Inglenook name putting it back where he felt it always belonged on the label of the wine made from the great Rutherford estate. The Inglenook 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon 'Cask' is the first wine to be released since then and proudly sports the prestigious estate name along with an etched image of the famously recognizable chateau.  The label signifies the return of Inglenook in every sense.

Francis Ford Coppola, Owner

"In America, so few things that are broken apart are ever put back together. Reuniting this property was truly a dream come true, both for my family and for Napa Valley."
