An adventurous wine of exceptional quality, the Montes Folly reaches 'wine heaven'. The Folly grapes are grown on the highest and steepest slopes of the Finca de Apalta estate. These grapes are handled with extreme care with a focus on low yields and small clusters, giving intense concentration to the wine.

Tasting the 2011 Folly is truly a unique sensory experience. It is deep ruby in color with intense and elegant black fruit, blueberries, plums and chocolate shavings on the nose. On the palate, the Folly is layered with blackberry, boysenberry, mocha and spice, complemented by velvety tannins and a fresh acidity.

MONTES Folly has a proven track record over six vintages.

Please note that the 2011 Vintage has not yet been reviewed. The Press for the 2010 vintage is included below for reference.

Purple Angel is a selection of our best Carmenère sourced from out main two Estates (50% from Apalta, were its sunny vineyards give elegance to the wine and 50% from our Marchigue Estate, a coastal cool weather vineyard that produces low yields naturally and provides strength, concentration and a deep, intense carmine colour to it).  A fantastic wine that blends both elegance and power.

Purple Angel showcases the spicy touches typical of Carmenère, with ripe, gentle and soft tannins, it's a full bodied, dense, rich, structured wine that combines red berries, spicy black fruit and dark chocolate on the mouth with alluring raspberry, wild strawberry and blackberry aromas on the nose.  The wine is blended with a touch of Petit Verdot to enhance its structure, color and cellaring potential.  A mouth filling wine with a dense and very long finish, definitely a unique Carmenère!

"A dark, ambitious red, with ample toast and mocha to the macerated plum skin, dark cherry and grilled fig fruit, pumping out layers of humus, iron and olive paste before the fruit returns for an encore on the finish. Carmenère and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020."  October 2012
A few words about Montes
Aurelio Montes
The plan that launched Viña Montes was hatched in 1987 when two partners with big dreams, Aurelio Montes the winemaker and Douglas Murray the marketing mogul, came together both with years of experience and passion for their home grown wine industry.  They believed that they could vastly improve the quality of Chilean wine being made at the time. In 1988, two more partners joined in, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, each bringing their technical experience and wisdom to the venture.  And that is how Viña Montes was born. The vision from the beginning included delivering to fine wine consumers worldwide first-class wine from Chile that was true to its terroir and in the spirit of its chief winemaker, Aurelio Montes.

Aurelio Montes is renowned by his peers and by international wine press as one of the top winemakers to come from Chile. In the 80's and 90's his leadership brought a revolution to quality and expectations of wine from Chile.  His insights lead to the development of vineyard sights in regions such as Apalta and Marchigüe.  Some called him crazy for venturing into these valleys and up their steep hillsides, but time has proven that his vision was clear.

Today Aurelio is considered a giant in Chile.  His drive to progress and to champion quality over quantity, and innovation over the status quo has yet to slow or diminish. Aurelio remains as committed and as enthusiastic as ever.  Only 25 years after he and Douglas Murray started their venture, Aurelio is now recognized as a pioneer, and a man of foresight and vision for his simple idea of allowing the vineyards of Chile to produce the best wine possible and to be proud of being Chilean.

"Montes is a Chilean pioneer in quality and pricing." James Molesworth, Wine Spectator
