POGGIOTONDO Marmoreccia Syrah Toscana IGT
Vinous - Antonio Galloni
VINOUS - Antonio Galloni

"The 2009 Marmorecchia, 100% Syrah, impresses for its gorgeous inner perfume and terrific overall balance. Syrah in this part of Tuscany isn't particularly varietal, but there is lovely depth and roundness to the flavors, along with spice, smoke and licorice overtones, all of which add complexity. The 2009 should drink nicely pretty much upon release.

About POGGIOTONDO
POGGIOTONDO Soil
Poggiotondo soil
Situated in the heart of Tuscany, between Florence and Pisa, Poggiotondo's wines are a pure expression of the Chianti region. With utter respect for this region, Alberto Antonini the owner and wine maker at Poggiotondo makes his wines in a modern style, whilst adhering to the true regional characteristics of the Chianti region in which the grapes are grown. Balance and harmony is the philosophy of all the Poggiotondo wines.

The Poggiotondo Terroir

The Location:  Poggiotondo is located in the western part of the Chianti region, on the hills that connect the Montalbano with the Arno valley.  The region is more directly influenced by the Mediterranean, which gives Poggiotondo a milder climate than other parts of Chianti.

Soils:  Blessed by mother nature, Poggiotondo's vineyards are planted on unique soils.  All of our vineyard area derives from marine origin, which has risen over the ages to form a marine sediment base.  This creates an exceptional combination of sites and different soils.

Seashells:  On the surface and even further underground, it is easy to find blankets of fossil seashells.  In some areas they are so abundant that they make up the principal component of the soil together with clay.

Fundamental to understanding the richness and complexity of Poggiotondo's terroir, is that the seashells release minerals to the vines through their roots, giving the wines minerality and freshness.  The calcium in particular, which is the main component of the shells, is responsible for elegance and complexity during the ageing of the wine.

"My job is just to interpret a great place and try to make, out of grapes, the truest wine without changing its character and its freshness." - Alberto Antonini
