Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru 2011

Côte de Beaune, France

PRICE:  $189.00/bottle

FORMAT: 3x750mL (wooden case)

93-96 POINTS

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

"2011 Corton Clos Des Cortons Faiveley Good deep red. A bit darker on the nose than the grand crus from Gevrey-Chambertin, offering explosive aromas of crushed raspberry, black cherry, exotic spices and a touch of smoke. Compellingly rich and seamless in the mouth, with terrific sappy verve to the urgent flavors of red berries, minerals and game. The very long, slowly rising finish boasts outstanding energy and thrust and saturates the mouth with sweet perfume."  January 2013

"2011 Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley: As is usually the case with this wine when it's young, the nose is restrained to the point of being almost mute though aggressive swirling liberates aromas of earth, spice, red currant and hints of the sauvage. And instead of the robust and well-muscled mid-palate there is an almost caressing mouth feel to the full-bodied yet refined flavors because while the supporting tannins are definitely firm and dense they are also quite finely-grained. There is excellent length to the moderately austere, tight, focused and linear finish that delivers outstanding persistence."  January 2013

"2011 Mazis-Chambertin Bright, deep red. Very deep aromas and flavors of raspberry, redcurrant, smoke and crushed rock. At once penetrating and utterly fine-grained; explosive sappy perfume fills the mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Pinot just doesn't pull off this trick anywhere but in Burgundy's top sites. Finishes with noble tannins and outstanding palate-staining length."  January 2013

"2011 Mazis-Chambertin: (from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the vines total a remarkable 1.20 ha). A discreet hint of wood allows the slightly riper and definitely more sauvage aromas of earth, humus, dark berries and soft spice notes to shine. There is excellent power to the robust and broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with structure-buffering dry extract that coats the palate on the mineral-driven, punchy and seriously persistent finish. This is not quite as austere as the Latricières though note that here too plenty of patience will be required."  January 2013

"2011 Latricières-Chambertin: (from a very large 1.21 ha parcel). A strikingly cool, restrained and very floral nose also offers up superbly elegant red currant and wet stone nuances where the latter element completely suffuses the medium weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the focused, precise and driving finish. There is plenty of mouth coating dry extract but even so, this is presently austere to the point of being Cistercian and as such note well that plenty of patience will be required as this is very firmly structured."  January 2013

"2011 Latricieres-Chambertin Good full medium red. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, crushed stone, white pepper, blood orange and flowers. Tight today and folded in on itself, with some excess CO2 currently suppressing the mid-palate fruit. Fairly tough tannins cut off the wine's finishing flavors, but the intensity and precision of this grand cru suggest that it will reward seven or eight years of cellaring."  January 2013

"2011 Clos De Vougeot Good bright, deep red. Cherry, rose petal, mocha and game on the nose, plus a hint of metallic minerality. Dense, sappy and youthfully tight; less expansive today than the Echezeaux and more peppery too. Has a serious spine for aging but seems a tad dry in the early going."  January 2013

"2011 Clos de Vougeot: (blended from 3 separate parcels). An attractively complex and unusually refined nose speaks of red currant, kirsch, soft earth and a hint of wood spice. There is a refined mouth feel to the larger-scaled flavors thanks to the fine grain of the ripe and well-integrated tannins on the mildly austere and impressively long, indeed even explosive finish. This is terrific and the backend offers the same excellent depth the nose promises. Lovely stuff."  January 2013

Premier Cru

Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Porets St. Georges 2011

PRICE:  $96.99/bottle

FORMAT: 6x750mL

91-93 POINTS
Burghound.com
"2011 Nuits St. Georges "Les Porêts St. Georges": A more deeply pitched and notably more complex nose that offers up notes of red and dark berries, sauvage nuances, underbrush and a hint of spice, all trimmed in just enough oak to notice. There is very solid mid-palate concentration to the larger-scaled flavors that possess an admirable amount of structure buffering dry extract before culminating in an energetic, balanced, complex and impressively long finish that displays only mild rusticity. This is excellent, indeed it's one the better vintages that I have seen for this wine. Recommended."  January 2013

Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 2011

"2011 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Damodes (50% new oak; no whole clusters): Good bright, deep red. Soil-driven aromas and flavors of red berries, caraway seed, mocha, chocolate and spices, lifted by a floral topnote. Tactile and intense, with strong saline minerality contributing to the impression of energy and precision. Finishes with suave, fine-grained tannins and excellent lift."  January 2013

"2011 Nuits St. Georges "Les Damodes": A spicy, fresh and mildly exotic nose of tea, wild red berries and plenty of pungent earth gives way to more obvious mineral-inflected flavors that possess a taut muscularity on the balanced, understated and attractively persistent finish. Even with the muscle, this is essentially a wine of finesse as the supporting tannins are really quite fine."  January 2013

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moins 2011

PRICE:  $96.99/bottle

FORMAT: 6x750mL

89-92 POINTS

"2011 Gevrey-Chambertin "Combe Aux Moines": (from a very large 1.2 ha parcel). Very generous wood dominates the otherwise fresh nose of dark berry, earth and humus aromas. The supple and round medium weight flavors possess good mid-palate concentration and verve before terminating in an austere, cool and mineral-inflected finish. My predicted range assumes that the wood can be successfully integrated."  January 2013

DOMAINE FAIVELEY Entrance

DOMAINE FAIVELEY

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is in a rare position in Burgundy of being a major vineyard owner with more than 120 hectares and 80% of their wines coming from family owned vineyards.

In December 2004, there was a change of the guard when Francois Faiveley stepped down and handed the reins of the company over to his son, Erwan. In a span of 8 years, Erwan has made some important changes in viticulture, vinification and maturation of the wines.

Historically based in the Côte de Nuits capital, the Faiveley family has progressively extended its domaine and today owns vineyards in the finest climats in Burgundy - Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet, Mercurey and others. The vineyards are very small, averaging 1 hectare per appellation.

Faiveley produces from more than 10 hectares of Grand Crus and nearly 25 hectares of Premier Crus, including several plots that are exclusively owned by the family.
