Bidding Begins for 2014 Alliance Contest Quilts
Asheville, North Carolina, November 11, 2014

Bidding has just begun on eBay for quilts made for the 2014 Quilt Alliance contest "Inspired By."

This is the 8th annual contest and auction for the Alliance, and all proceeds will be used to sustain and grow the oral history and documentation projects run by the nonprofit organization.

The 95 quilts entered into this year's contest have been divided up into three groups, with bids for each quilt starting at $60. All the quilts measure 16 inches by 16 inches and have a hanging sleeve.

As usual, makers of the contest quilts come from across the country and around the world and include such notable quiltmakers as Yvonne Porcella, Pamela Allen, Allison Aller, Sue Bleiweiss and Victoria Findlay Wolfe.

Week one auction quilts include works by: (top row, left to right): Margarita Korioth,

Janneke Van Der Ree, Pauline Salzman (bottom row, left to right): Jamie Fingal, Sherri Lipman McCauley, Jean Van Bockel

This year's theme required contest quilts to be inspired in some way by quilts that are archived in either The Quilt Index or the Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) project. The Quilt Index is a partner project of the Alliance, Michigan State University Museum and MATRIX: Center for Digital Humanities & Social Sciences. Q.S.O.S. is one the Alliance's core oral history projects. The contest gallery on the Quilt Alliance website shows each quilt entered into the contest, next to the specific quilt that helped inspire its design and construction. Thus, buyers of these quilts will acquire a small gem of craftsmanship that also tells a story about quilt history.

Quilts available this first week include a masterful miniature Pineapple Log Cabin by Jane Hall (below left); a whimsical quilt version of Whistler's Mother by Eleanor Levie (below center) that references a Jean Laurie quilt called "Listen to Your Mother"; and a striking abstract silk piece by Julie Dugas (below right), inspired by a 100-year-old Roman coins quilt.

The first auction week, which began on November 10, will end on Monday, November 17, at 9 pm eastern. The second week will begin immediately after, at 9:00 pm on November 17 and end on Monday, November 24. The final week goes from November 24 to December 1, at 9 pm eastern.
