Inspired By...You!

You have two more weeks of production time if you're planning to enter our annual small quilt contest. This year's theme is "Inspired By"-- each entrant must start with a selection from The Quilt Index or Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories projects as their inspiration quilt. All entries must be 16" x 16", comprised of 3 layers (top, filling and back), and include a 4" sleeve and a label. Mail it to us with your entry form and fee by June 1, 2014 (postmark deadline).

Professional judges will select the Handi Quilter Grand Prize and the winner will receive a HQ Sweet Sixteen longarm sit-down machine package (machine, table and bobbin winder) by Handi Quilter, Inc.  Prize includes training by a local Handi Quilter retailer.

First, Second and Third place and Honorable Mention awards will be voted on by Alliance members and prizes will be supplied by these generous Quilt Alliance Business Members Moda Fabrics, eQuilter.com,  The Electric Quilt Company, EZ Quilting,  Simplicity Creative Group,  AURIfil. Our venue sponsor is Original Sewing & Quilt Expo, and our documentation sponsor is stkr.it.

All of our annual contest entries are documented in The Quilt Index and travel to quilt shows, museums and other exhibition venues. All quilts are a donation to the Quilt Alliance and will be auctioned to benefit the work of this 20-year-old nonprofit organization to document, preserve and share the history of quilts and quiltmakers.

"Metal Measures" by Jamie Fingal. 2010, is one of more than 400 Alliance contest quilts documented in The Quilt Index.

Complete contest info can be found here.

We've been inspired by some of the early entries--take a peak for yourself:

Robin Buscemi of Ringoes, New Jersey, is blogging about her entry inspired by a very special quilt made in 1933 for the Sears Quilt Contest, held in honor of the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago, themed "A Century of Progress." The quilt is now owned by Merikay Waldvogel who contributed this and other quilts from the 1933 contest and ephemera from her personal collection to the Quilt Index.

One of Robin's first sketches for her quilt.

You can see more in-process images of Robin's quilt on her blog, Threads bespoke: http://threadsbespoke.com/tag/inspired-by/ and on Instagram, just search the hashtag #inspiredby.

Eleanor Levie
of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, not only chose a quilt from The Quilt Index to launch her entry, but also found inspiration in a classic painting by Whistler.

"Listen to Your Mother" by Jean Ray Laury. 1997. Contributed to The Quilt Index by the National Quilt Museum.

"Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 1"
(better known as "Whistler's Mother") by
American painter James Whistler. 1871.
Collection of Muse d'Orsay, Paris.

Quilt Alliance board members have also been hard at work creating their 2014 quilts. These talented folks are not eligible to win of course, but their quilts will be included in our eBay auction in November, so jot down your favorites.

Visit our blog to see if you can match up the inspiration quilts below with the quilts made by our board members. Everyone who posts their guesses as a comment will be entered to win a special prize, just play by Monday, May 19 at 5pm Eastern.
