Spring is here!!

The daffodils are finally blooming in the Blue Ridge Mountains! It's been a long winter for most of us Northern Hemisphere folks, and while I'm sure a *lot* of quilts were born while the wind whistled outside, it's time to peek out of our cozy cabins and come together. The party planning crew has been hard at work since the fall to create the best Quilters Take Manhattan event ever. Read below to see how feedback from last year's attendees shaped the exciting offerings we've put together for the 2014 event.
My colleague Debby Josephs has no sooner cleared a spot in our office for this year's contest quilts, before they started to arrive. Jodi Scaltreto of Hillsboro, New Hampshire sent in the first entry for the 2014 "Inspired By" contest. Jodi was our first entrant in the 2011 contest too (see her "Flower Fairies" above) I am in awe of her motivation (and creativity)! Watch a video by Mark Lipinski, below, to jump start your own entry.

Here's to spring and to inspiration--let the defrost begin!

Sincerely,

FiveStory Quarters--Are YOU subscribed?

Our new members-only eJournal, Story Quarters, is set to go out to members at the end of this month. This electronic quarterly was created to invite our members to learn more about and get closer to our projects, initiatives and events. We're excited about featuring the work and words of our members, our volunteers and our partners and we hope you will regularly share your feedback on Story Quarters and contact us if you have an idea for a story or a series.

If you're not yet an Alliance member or you missed reading our 2013 issue, here's a recap:

Volume 1, Issue 1 featured Alliance staff member, Emma Parker, shared her trip to the first QuiltCon, where she was interviewing quilters for the new Go Tell It! project. Alliance member Helen Kamphuis from the Netherlands told about her experiences as a Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) interviewer during the 2011 International Quilt Festival. In a follow up to an On This Day in History Quilt blog post, we invited quilter Robin Berson to tell about her involvement with a quilt honoring the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911.

Volume 1, Issue 2 broke the news of the first recipients of the Ardis James Q.S.O.S. Scholars Program: Barbara Brackman, Christine Humphrey and Merikay Waldvogel. Alliance charter member Virginia Vis, curatorial assistant at the DAR Museum in Washington, DC, contributed an article about her work at the DAR researching and entering data on the museum's quilts in the Quilt Index. We also asked members to help us select quilts for an Inspiration Gallery to introduce our 2014 quilt contest, Inspired By.

Coming up in Volume 2, Issue 1: We are thrilled to have another article from Virginia Vis this quarter. "How to Make an Heirloom Quilt-a Textile Conservator's View" will show you how to make quilts that stand the test of time. Virginia also gives us a peak at a recent restoration project at the DAR Museum with impressive before and after photos (teaser photos below). We'll share the results of a two-year grant from the Ardis and Robert James Foundation, as well as our vision for upcoming work on the Q.S.O.S. and Go Tell It projects.

Members who are up to date as of March 26 will receive the next Story Quarters via email. Join or renew today to be sure you don't miss this issue! Not sure of your membership renewal date? Just contact Debby at admin@quiltalliance.org or 828-251-7073.
