JoyceRemembering Joyce Gross
Joyce Gross, a pioneer of the Quilt Revival Movement starting in the early 1970's, died on Christmas Eve in her home in California. Gross, a researcher, scholar, publisher, teacher, collector, organizer and maker of quilts, will be sorely missed. She leaves behind a large community of devoted friends, colleagues and students. As founder and publisher of Quilt Journal magazine and founder of the Point Bonita retreat for quilters, Gross was a catalyst for projects that benefited scholars and practitioners alike.

Gross is one of eighteen individuals whose life and work is documented in the Quilt Treasures web portrait project, a collaboration of the Quilt Alliance , the Michigan State University Museum, and MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences Online.

View the Joyce Gross Quilt Treasures web portrait here including a mini-documentary, videotaped interview segments, a photo gallery, timeline, and biography.

Katherine J. Adams, Quilt Curator at the Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin, said in remembrance of Gross:

Joyce Gross's passion for everything related to quilts and their histories prompted her to assemble an extraordinary collection of both quilts and quilt history documentation. Joyce created her collection both to preserve quilt history and to share it, and her collection, now housed and available for research at the Dolph Briscoe Center for
American History, The University of Texas at Austin, will forever remain her legacy and a celebration of her life. I had the pleasure and honor of working closely with Joyce for the past five years. I shall miss her wit, charm, enormous expertise, and, of course, the fun of "talking quilts."

Joyce Gross was inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame in 1996 and was honored at the International Quilt Festival in 2005 with an exhibition of quilts from her collection. A Tribute to Joyce from Karey Bresenhan can be found on The Quilters Hall of Fame website.

This Quilt Treasures interview was made possible by generous donations to Quilt Alliance from Jinny Beyer and from Lake Mills Studios. Completion of the web portrait was made possible by significant contributions to the Alliance from RJR Fashion Fabrics in honor of Judy Sabanek and from Karey Patterson Bresenhan and Nancy O'Bryant Puentes in loving memory of their mother and aunt, Jewel Pearce Patterson.

The project was completed with additional in-kind support from Michigan State University Museum and MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at MSU. View complete credits here.
