Freshmen win Spirit Week

After a frenzied week of competition, including theme dress days, hallway decorating, lunchtime activities, wacky Olympic games and the Night Rally, the freshman class was declared the winner of Spirit Week 2016.

This is the third consecutive year that the freshman class has come out on top.

The point totals were as follows: freshmen 2,256; juniors 2,179; sophomores 2,121 and seniors 2,037.

Service Learning a Powerful Experience for Yau-Weeks Twins

Just a couple of years ago, Christian Yau-Weeks '17 had not had prior, close interactions with those with special needs, and thus was unsure as to how to approach certain situations involving them.

"When I saw people with special needs I would subconsciously try to avoid any interaction because I wasn't sure what to do," he said.
Christian's outlook changed dramatically after he volunteered at Camp Krem, a facility in Boulder Creek that provides recreation, adventure, fun and friendships to children and adults with special needs, for his Anawim project.

At Camp Krem, Christian, along with his twin sister Sophia, worked with adults and children experiencing Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD and other physical, emotional or developmental disabilities.

Best-Selling AUthor Visits O'Dowd

Best-selling author Jennifer Niven made a return visit to O'Dowd last week to talk about her latest young adult novel, Holding Up The Universe, which was released October 4. Several classes were on hand for her presentation, held in the theater. "The best thing about being a writer is getting to meet and talk to readers," she said.

Students Seek Opportunities to Explore Careers

When asked what career they plan to pursue, some students readily offer an answer often accompanied with a detailed plan of where they will to go to college and the extra curricular programs they will participate in along the way.

For most students, however, this is not the case.  Most teenagers are just starting to discover their skills and interests and view the future and its many options with a combination of hope, excitement and uncertainty.

Regardless of where they are on their journey, the Career Partnerships Program is a resource that supports all students.
Attorney Coaches Needed for Mock Trial Team

Bishop O'Dowd High School's Mock Trial team is looking for some attorney coaches to help prepare the team for competition in January.

Parents who have mock trial experience as well as trial experience would be especially helpful.

The team meets after school, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m.  The time commitment is flexible.

If you can help at all - even once or twice each month, please contact teacher/coach Bonnie Sussman. Hoping to hear from some of our many attorney parents!!
