Sustainability Speaker SEries Welcomes Paul Valva '76

The CES was brimming with students, alumni, parents and faculty at last week's Sustainability Guest Speaker Series session, which featured Paul Valva '76. The talk provided an engaging and interdisciplinary discussion on the built environment, climate change, and how to make waves in our community.

Paul brought a great deal of knowledge and experience to his presentation, as he has received a Master in Strategic Leadership Towards Sustainability from the Blekinge Tekniska Hogskola in Karlskrona, Sweden.

In 2006, Paul was trained as a member of Al Gore's The Climate Project to educate the public about climate change. Currently he serves as an advisor to Paul Hawken's Project Drawdown in addition to acting as a principal with the Valva Realty Company - a third generation family-owned real estate brokerage company located in Oakland.

Students Learn about the history of the world trade center

Students in Brian Cushing's AP US History class were babies when the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center occurred.

But the students had the opportunity to gain a better understanding about that fateful day in American history from someone intimately connected to the World Trade Center, Cherrie Nanninga '66.

The former Director of Real Estate for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Nanninga's office was on the 88th floor of World Trade Center Tower 1.

Had it not been for a doctor's appointment and the unavailability of a colleague to meet her for a breakfast meeting at Windows on the World, a restaurant located on the 107th floor of her building, Nanninga could have lost her life that day.

Ethan Grossman '18 Polishes Broadcasting Skills

Ethan Grossman '18, left, with Colm Connolly '19.

O'Dowd's dynamic play-by-play announcer Ethan Grossman '18 had an opportunity over the summer that most budding broadcasters could only dream of - attending a special camp for high school students interested in sports journalism.

One of 30 participants in the Cronkite Sports Broadcast Boot Camp, held June 19-July 3 on the Arizona State University campus, Grossman found himself in the middle of the action covering professional sports teams such as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Phoenix Mercury.

High-Powered Medical panel Talks with Sports Medicine Students

An inspiring group of medical professionals visited Jay Beito's Sports Medicine class last week, discussing their individual professional paths and various career options in medicine.

They also offered students practical advice regarding college choices and summer programs that could provide students a leg up in the college admissions process.

Get Ready for an Interactive Yearbook Experience

Yearbook co-editor Sydni Resnick '17 and video editor Reece Mladjov '17.

Gone are the days when spring sports and school activities that happen in April and May aren't featured in the O'Dowd yearbook due to publishing deadlines.

"It is time to include the whole year in our school self-portrait," Journalism teacher Damian Barnes said. "We have been innovating with our student publications for the last four years, and this year we are turning it up a big notch!"

For his Eagle project, Thane worked with Project Eye-to-Eye (a mentoring program for students with LD/ADHD) students he mentored at St. Leander School to create a mural on that campus.

Sound Room Concert Success

Congratulations to O'Dowd's Jazz Bands and String Orchestra for their huge success at the first time ever sold out Sound Room concert and fundraiser on Sunday, October 9.

Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this happen.  Stay tuned for more similar events.

Students Seek Opportunities to Explore Careers

When asked what career they plan to pursue, some students readily offer an answer often accompanied with a detailed plan of where they will to go to college and the extra curricular programs they will participate in along the way.

For most students, however, this is not the case.  Most teenagers are just starting to discover their skills and interests and view the future and its many options with a combination of hope, excitement and uncertainty.

Regardless of where they are on their journey, the Career Partnerships Program is a resource that supports all students.
Attorney Coaches Needed for Mock Trial Team

Bishop O'Dowd High School's Mock Trial team is looking for some attorney coaches to help prepare the team for competition in January.

Parents who have mock trial experience as well as trial experience would be especially helpful.

The team meets after school, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m.  The time commitment is flexible.

If you can help at all - even once or twice each month, please contact teacher/coach Bonnie Sussman. Hoping to hear from some of our many attorney parents!!
