Dragon Talks Tackle Tough Issues

Are you willing to have conversations about race, police brutality and white privilege? O'Dowd students are.

Students of all races and backgrounds gathered in the theater for the first Dragon Talks event, held on October 6 during MP, which offered a forum to discuss the current racial difficulties our country is experiencing.

Students on the Executive Council of the Associated Student Body and members of the Black Student Union and Campus Ministry Team facilitated the talk, fully supported by the O'Dowd administration.
"As a school we are responsible for nurturing our students and gifting them tools to advocate, as well as engaging their minds and hearts," Assistant Principal Jase Turner said.

Girls in STE(A)M Club Launched

The nearly 20 girls and one boy who attended the first meeting of the Girls in STE(A)M club, held during MP on October 5, were challenged to work in groups to build the tallest, free-standing structure with a bundle of pipe cleaners in a limited amount of time.

Club co-founder Emma Wawrzynek '17 added stumbling blocks along the way - instructing each student to put one hand behind their back as they worked to create their structure, then telling the students they had to work in silence.

Through the activity, the students learned about teamwork and project planning, and how to navigate a project with limited resources and constraints - skills needed to succeed in fields like structural and civil engineering.     Read more

Mock Trial Team forming

The O'Dowd Mock Trial team is looking for new members to complete the 25 person team that will compete in this year's Alameda County Mock Trial competition. This activity is open to students in all grades.

We are looking for students to be character witnesses, as well as pre-trial and trial attorneys, a bailiff and a timekeeper.

This year's case, People v Awbrey, is a case involving human trafficking and false imprisonment, with a pre-trial argument on the 4th and 5th amendments.

An information meeting for students will be held tomorrow,  October 13, after school in Room 201. The meeting will begin promptly at 3:15 p.m. and should last about 30 minutes.

Attorney Coaches Needed for Mock Trial Team

Bishop O'Dowd High School's Mock Trial team is looking for some attorney coaches to help prepare the team for competition in January.

Parents who have mock trial experience as well as trial experience would be especially helpful.

The team meets after school, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m.  The time commitment is flexible.

If you can help at all - even once or twice each month, please contact teacher/coach Bonnie Sussman. Hoping to hear from some of our many attorney parents!!
