Inaugural Fall Equinox Festival a Success
|
|
By S-Corps Leadership Team Members Sal Beeby, Stefano Hurtado and Tyler LeBoa
The autumn equinox - meaning "equal night" in Latin - occurs once a year and marks the first day of fall. On the equinox, we have 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. After this, the days start to become shorter and the nights become longer. Around the world, different cultures gather around traditions that acknowledge the balance and transition represented in the equinox.
This year, S-Corps put together a festival for O'Dowd students centered around this natural event. The concept was a carnival-style festival that would be held on the baseball field during a home football game, with the purpose of spreading information about the environment, as well as celebrate and have a good time.

In 1957, Minnijean Brown Trickey was one of nine African-American students who broke the color barrier at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
As a participant on the civil rights tour Sojourn to the Past you will get to meet Minijean and hear her story first hand.
Often called "one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced," John Lewis has dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he calls "The Beloved Community" in America. This time we are lucky enough to have Congressman Lewis traveling with us on the trip. Just imagine one of the most prominent civil rights figures riding side-by-side with your student.
The trip is in March, but we have to reserve our spots now. Mrs. Green will host a parent information night on Wednesday, October 12, beginning at 7 p.m. in Room 213, where you will hear from some of the students who participated last year. There is financial aid available.
Please contact Mrs. Green with any questions or concerns.

Sunset and Pizza on the Patio Dragon Parents Kick off a New Year
|
|
Thanks to all who turned out on a lovely evening to share some pizza and wine with the Dragon Parents Group. We mixed and mingled with longtime friends, while welcoming many new parents
- everyone exploring opportunities to contribute to our school community.
A beautiful sunset on the CES patio created an inspiring backdrop for observations and insights offered by Principal J.D. Childs and President Steve Phelps. Principal Childs spoke about the rewards of finding
"fusion"with other people in pursuit of a common purpose. In his warm and welcoming way, President Phelps appreciated the enthusiasm of our parent community and the many ways volunteers contribute to the school's success.
If you missed our first meeting, no worries. The Dragon Parents Group has a calendar of upcoming events to celebrate our community and our kids' achievements! Watch your email for opportunities to get involved with the DPG. Questions or suggestions? Please email us at
Go Dragons! Let's make it a great year - together!
