Seniors and Parents Reflect at Special Mass
|
|
Members of the Class of 2017 and their parents laughed and cried together at the annual Senior & Parent Mass, held September 27 in the large gymnasium. Afterwards, the group gathered in the small gymnasium for sweet treats, punch and conversation.
O'Dowd chaplain Fr. Jim Sullivan celebrated the Mass, while the senior Campus Ministry Team performed a skit that helped parents and students reflect upon the high school years, as well as look to the future.

Join us for O'Dowd's major fundraiser of the year! The Transforming Lives Dinner is set for Thursday, November 3, beginning at 6 p.m., on the O'Dowd campus.
Alan McIntosh (pictured at left with O'Dowd President Steve Phelps), along with his wife Imelda, agreed to serve as chair because "O'Dowd is definitely a life-changer for many kids, and this dinner helps enable many young people and their families to take advantage of this wonderful institution."
Event proceeds help support the more than 30 percent of O'Dowd students who receive financial aid, making their O'Dowd experience possible.

Ben Sparks '87 Kicks off Sustainability Guest Speaker Series

O'Dowd's 2016-17 Sustainability Guest Speaker Series was kicked off during Meeting Period (MP) on September 15, with Ben Sparks '87 providing faculty and students insight on the world of recycling and waste. Ben is truly an expert in the waste industry, and is currently the Senior Consultant at Green Planet 21, a sustainable company specializing in recycling and zero-landfill.

Dragon Golf Classic Raises Funds for Financial Aid

Celebrities including Golden State Warrior and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala, NBA Hall of Famer Gary "The Glove" Payton, Los Angeles Lakers Assistant Coach Brian Shaw '83, former Oakland Raider running back Charlie Smith and new Warriors Assistant Coach/Player Development Willie Green joined in the effort to raise funds for the Transforming Lives Fund for Financial Aid by participating in the Dragon Golf Classic.
The celebrities were among 114 golfers who participated in the event, held at the Claremont Country Club on September 19. Read more

Gene Yang a MacArthur "Genius Award" winner
|
|
Former O'Dowd teacher Gene Yang was last week named a winner of a MacArthur fellowship, awarded for exceptional "originality, insight and potential," and will receive a $625,000 grant over five years. In January, Gene was the first graphic novelist named a national ambassador for children's literature by the Library of Congress.

College Financial Aid Night COming Up

Join the counseling department and a financial aid professional on Wednesday, October 5, from 7-9 p.m., in the theater for an informative evening focused on the successful completion of college financial aid forms.
This presentation is meant to clarify the process around applying for college financial aid with an emphasis on the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and introduction to the CSS Profile and Cal Grant Process. Other topics to be discussed include the different financial aid options and the various ways that families can make college more accessible and affordable. We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Spanish speaking presentation on the same date and at the same time in Dominican Lounge. Read more

If you are interested in sharing your excitement about O'Dowd and your family's experience with prospective families, we need you. Parenting Stressed Teens and Mindfulness

The first of our Parent Education Evenings speaker series will take place on Thursday, October 6, from 7-8:30 p.m., in the theater. Our speaker for this evening will be teen stress and mindfulness expert Gina M. Biegel MA, LMFT. Ms. Biegel will be speaking on helping parents better cope with stressed teens and the stresses of parenting. RSVP for the event.

"Dragon Mornings" are a series of receptions held here at school for prospective students and their families. The Dragon Parents Group has recruited parent volunteers to bake delicious breakfast treats to serve our guests. Thank you for signing up! What we need now are a few more helper-hosts to set up our table and welcome new families.
