O'Dowd's Next Principal Selected
J.D. Childs Succeeds Retiring Pam Shay

A collaborative leader and forward-thinking educator with strong roots in Catholic education has been selected as the next principal for Bishop O'Dowd High School. President Steve Phelps announced on March 1 that James "J.D." Childs has been named principal effective July 1, 2016. Childs will be the 13th principal to lead O'Dowd since the school's opening in 1951.
Childs, 47, was selected after a comprehensive search process involving a committee comprised of Board of Regents, administration, faculty, parents, and Diocesan and community representatives, and with the approval of Bishop Michael Barber, S.J. Bishop O'Dowd High School's efforts to create an environmentally sustainable, socially just, and economically viable world have not gone unnoticed.
The California State Department of Education announced on Feb 26, that O'Dowd is the first Catholic school among a select group of California schools and school districts to receive the highest-level honor (Green Achiever) in the state's Green Ribbon Schools program. O'Dowd is now in the running for federal recognition.
"I commend these schools and districts for reducing their environmental footprints and engaging students using sustainability and the environment as the context for learning," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said. "Their efforts are helping to build healthier, more resilient communities and a more prosperous California." Read more...

The Black Pearl
Black History Month Assembly Features Music, Dance and Song
O'Dowd students enjoyed stirring song, poetry readings and dance performances at the Black History Month Assembly, themed "The Black Pearl," held in the large gym on Feb. 25. A community presentation was to be staged in the theater on Feb. 27.
Sponsored and organized by the Black Student Union (BSU), with guidance from the group's moderator and faculty member Tony Green and staff member Marguerite Green, this was the school's 30th annual celebration of Black History Month. The assembly was seven months in the making and involved more than 70 students. Read more...

Basketball Teams Advance in NCS Playoffs Semifinal Games Tonight
Both the men's and women's basketball teams have advanced to the semifinals of the NCS D3 playoffs.
The No. 5 seed men's team travels to No. 1 seed Moreau Catholic tonight for a 7 p.m. game, and the No. 2 seed women's team hosts No. 3 seed Campolindo tonight at 7 p.m.

Kai Morton '17 Wins Computing Award
As a youngster, Kai (Ayanna) Morton was obsessed with video games. Annoyed that her daughter was spending so much time gaming, Kai's mom, Kimberley Bryant, sought to expand her daughter's horizons by encouraging her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). So she enrolled Kai in a week-long summer Tech Camp at Stanford University, where Kai got a taste of programming, game design, robotics and more. Read more...

Returning Student Registration and Enrollment for 2016-17
Information was e-mailed earlier this week to current O'Dowd families about re-enrollment and registration for the next academic year. The enrollment portal is now open and the deadline to re-enroll is March 16, 2016. Returning families will need to secure enrollment with a $900 non-refundable deposit by that date.
