Open up the huddle.

That was the message that NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott delivered at the inaugural Fund A Dream Luncheon held at Bishop O'Dowd High School on Nov. 7.

Attended by more than 200 people, the event was a major success, raising more than $115,000 for financial aid.

This year, O'Dowd will provide $2.4 million in financial assistance to 350 deserving students through the O'Dowd Scholars Program. But there are still students in need. Read more...

Helping Student-Athletes Stay at the Top of Their Game in the Classroom

It's no surprise that varsity basketball players Jack Kalmbach and Jeevin Sandu, along with team manager Lucas Cortez, spend countless hours in the gym working hard on skills and strategy.

Their academic regimen is equally important to them - so much so that they are putting in extra hours with Sr. Anne Eugene Metcalf, CSJ, the newest addition to the Academic Support Team.

Specializing in Chemistry, Sr. Anne Eugene works primarily with student-athletes in tutored study halls on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. And, judging by the grades that Kalmbach, Sandu and Cortez are currently posting in the subject, the tutoring is a grand success. Strength & Conditioning for Your High School Athlete

Ever wonder when it's OK for your athlete to start weight training? Would you like to know what type of pre-season training your son/daughter is participating in? Do you want to see what types of tools your athletes are using to build strength and flexibility?

Join us in the weight room on Dec. 3, from 6-7 p.m., for a special session with O'Dowd's strength and conditioning coach, Jay Beito, and he will answer these questions and much more.

Coach Beito will give you a tour of the new weight room, describe the pre-season and in-season training regimes, and discuss how the program is helping to prevent injuries for our athletes. Get more details...

Kairos Retreat Sign Ups

Kairos is a wonderful three-day, two-night retreat for juniors. It offers students a chance to reflect on their lives, connect with others and explore relationships between family, friends, and God.

There is still room on the February (Feb. 20-22) and April (April 17-19) retreats, and those interested are encouraged to contact Cristina Airaghi for more information.

Educational Support Group for Parents

Ralph Cantor, former director of the Alameda County youth education program on drug and alcohol use and annual speaker at Teen Challenge Meetings, meets with all health classes over the course of the year to discuss issues around drug and alcohol use.

Ralph is offering to begin a support group for parents interested in receiving practical and personal information and support for communicating with your teens, and their friends and other parents, about alcohol and other drugs.

Whether your child is using or you are just concerned about the possibilities of use or the impact of the culture for your child, it's easier to figure out your next steps when you have some time to think and talk about it.  Ralph will facilitate the group, which will hopefully meet twice monthly.  For more information, please contact Ralph at rjcantor@aol.com.

Parents in Prayer

Parents in Prayer is a group of O'Dowd parents and caregivers who meet on Wednesdays at 8:45 a.m. in the Chapel to pray for our students and our school. We would love to have you join us!

Upcoming prayer dates are: Nov. 14, 28, and Dec. 5 and 12.
