YOU'RE INVITED
© Alusiv Inc.

Please join us on Friday, November 14 at 5:30pm for the opening reception of Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War, a national traveling exhibition which focuses on Abraham Lincoln's struggle to meet the constitutional challenges of the Civil War.

MHS is offering three free public programs in connection with the exhibition: Free and Responsible Government: The Long Shadow of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address with speaker Jared Peatman on November 14 (directly following the reception at 7pm); Maine in the Civil War with speaker Lee Webb on November 18 at 12:00pm; and Portland's Irish in the Civil War with speaker Matthew Jude Barker on December 2 at 12:00pm.

This exhibition will be on view in the second floor reading room of the Brown Library, and is open to visitors free of charge on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10am-4pm.

Lincoln: The Constitution & the Civil War is being co-sponsored by Maine Irish Heritage Center, and was organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. It has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center.

DIGITAL HISTORY
New Submissions to
Your Home, Past & Present

"This is the home of Peter Fifield Sanborn (my great, great grandfather) at 47 Middle Street Hallowell, Maine.

The ca. 1870 photograph comes from my family collection, and the modern image I took around 2010. With the exception of some minor landscaping changes in the front, the home has not changed very much!"

Submitted by Debora Wilson
67 Alba Street, Portland, Maine

1924 and 2014

Submitted by Cindi Bartlett

In June, our exhibition Home: The Longfellow House and the Emergence of Portland opened with a special display of images from folks like Cindi Bartlett and Debora Wilson (see their recent submission above).

There's still plenty of time to participate in this photography project! We are interested in seeing what your home looked like in the past and how it appears today. Submit your images and we'll install them in our exhibition and share them online. We welcome images from all towns and all states. Your childhood home, the residences of friends and family members, or intriguing houses in your area are all acceptable.

SPOTLIGHT ON Local & Legendary Teams
Livermore's Spruce Mountain High School students scan and catalog items at the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center for Maine Memory Network. Teachers created a year-long elective called "Hands-on History" specifically for the Local & Legendary project.

Our Local & Legendary: Maine in the Civil War project in collaboration with Maine Humanities Council is three months into the final project year. The five community teams--Bethel, Livermore, Pittsfield, Rumford, Scarborough--are busy with many activities.

The project requires teams comprised of schools, historical societies, and libraries, to digitize local historical collections related to the Civil War era in their town, turn those into an exhibit on Maine Memory Network, and facilitate a community reading using a Civil War book.

To stay on top of what the teams are doing, check out the Maine Memory Network blog. Recent posts explore how teachers are embedding the project in their curriculum in Livermore, Rumford, and Scarborough.
