This Week's Public Program Highlights
|
On Thursday at 7:00pm author Nicholas Bunker joins us to talk about his book, An Empire on the Edge: How Britain Came to Fight America. His account of the Boston Tea Party and the origins of the American Revolution shows how a lethal blend of politics, personalities, and economics led to a war that few people welcomed but nobody could prevent. The monthly First Friday Art Walk happens this Friday at 5:00pm, and we'll be celebrating the opening of our new gallery exhibition Wholesome Habitations. Visitors can watch a traditional blacksmithing demonstration outside the Wadsworth-Longfellow House by master blacksmith Sam Smith.

Wholesome Habitations Opens During First Friday Art Walk
Our new gallery show, Wholesome Habitations: Architectural Collections of the Maine Historical Society opens with a reception during the First Friday Art Walk on October 3 from 5:00 - 8:00pm. Wholesome Habitations showcases the architectural collections of the Brown Library at Maine Historical Society. The selection includes a sampling from the architectural collections including John Calvin Stevens, the Coombs Bros., Gibbs & Pulsifer, Eaton Tarbell, John Thomas, and Frederick Tompson. On display are various forms of architectural drawings and supplemental items, such as presentation drawings, elevations, floor plans, decorative elements, and photographs.

NEW: The Children's Hour, an after school story and craft program
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was often called "the children's poet" and his love of children is well known. Maine Historical Society invites children ages 4-9 to celebrate reading and literature at Longfellow's childhood home with a new program called The Children's Hour. The program begins with a read aloud of a favorite children's book in or around the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, followed by a fun craft-making activity inspired by the story. The program is led by Kathleen Neumann, Manager of School and Interpretative Programs. Upcoming Children's Hour dates: October 14, 21, and 28 at 3:30pm. The program is free and refreshments will be served. Participating children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver; check-in at the Museum Store. Space is limited. Please call or email Kathleen the Friday before a program to reserve a spot: 207-774-1822, ext. 214, kneumann@mainehistory.org.

Autumn in the Maine woods...100 years ago

Being outdoors in the Maine woods in the fall is the best time - crisp cool nights, warm days, colorful autumn foliage, and, best of all, no mosquitoes or black flies. In northern Maine there are many sporting camps that lure folks from afar to where hunting and fishing opportunities abound. At the turn of the 20th century one of these camps, owned by the Parmachenee Club, offered expeditions into these northern woods. The Parmachenee Club was formed in 1890 by a group of (mostly) New York City lawyers. The members obtained a lease of 120,000 acres of land, from the Old Aziscohos Dam above Wilson's Mills to the Canadian border. They hunted and fished within these acres, and built a camp, called "Camp in the Meadows," along the Magalloway River in Oxford County, where they lodged. Maine Guides assisted the members on their hunting and fishing expeditions. Continue reading this blog post by Nancy Noble, MHS Archivist & Cataloger.
