This Week's Program Highlights
|
This week we are offering two public programs by fantastic speakers. | |
Kathleen Brown
|
On Tuesday, James Witherall presents on his new biography, Ed Muskie: Made in Maine, 1914-1960, and traces the story of the son of an immigrant tailor through two terms as Maine's governor. On Thursday, Kathleen Brown, Professor of History at University of Pennsylvania, travels to Maine to present her lecture What's Laundry Got to do With it?: Caring for the Body in the 19th Century United States. She is the author of Foul Bodies: Cleanliness in Early America and will help us imagine what body care and hygiene may have been like in the Wadsworth-Longfellow House.

As one of Maine's oldest and most respected family-owned businesses, J.B. Brown & Sons continues to invest in Portland and to give back to the community. Vin's leadership and generosity have led the business for many years.
Join us for this special event on Tuesday, September 30, from 5:30-7:30pm. Tickets are $50. RSVP by September 24 to Elizabeth Nash, 207-774-1822 ext. 206.

An Abundance of Scrapbooks Notes from the Archives with Nancy Noble
|
Scrapbooks can be charming and quirky--the whimsical selections reflect the tastes of the compiler. They can be informative--documenting a movement or organization. And they can be indicative of how people created, collected, and presented information many years ago, in the days before the digital tools we have at our fingertips existed.
This summer, MHS archivist/cataloger Nancy Noble took on the project of pulling 109 scrapbooks out of backlog, where some have languished for at least 50 years, waiting to see the light of day. In this blog post written by Nancy, she shares some of her favorites, observations, and a slideshow of images depicting the clippings that Mainers found worthy of preserving.

Your gifts to our annual fund support everything MHS does--from library services to lectures, museum exhibitions, and the Maine Memory Network. Our new exhibition, Home: The Longfellow House and the Emergence of Portland, gives students an opportunity to interact with history in a whole new way, by connecting their own stories to how people lived in the past. Your support is essential! Click here to make your donation quickly and securely before our fiscal year ends on September 30th. Or call our Office of Institutional Advancement at 207-774-1822 to pay by credit card or make a gift of stock.
