MHS NEWS
Much To Do This Week! This week we have five special programs, and our Wadsworth-Longfellow House Tours and Walking Tours are offered daily. We are especially pleased to have Allan Levinsky, author and longtime MHS staff member, present a talk Tuesday at noon on his brand new book about Portland's Great Fire of 1866. On Friday evening, the museum will be open free of charge to those coming out for the First Friday Art Walk. See our program details below for other events happening here this week.

Historical Images: Remembering Portland's Union Station
|
 | |
Union Station, ca. 1910 MMN #10754
|
On August 31, 1961 Portland's Union Station on St. John Street was demolished. First opened on June 25, 1888, Union Station was a terminus for the Boston & Maine, Maine Central and the Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad lines, serving as the main transportation point for tourists at the beginning of the 20th century. Following World War II, the popularity of automobiles increased, making it only a matter of time before train travel was obsolete. The station's dramatic demolition in 1961 served as inspiration for the creation of Greater Portland Landmarks. View images of Union Station on Maine Memory Network.

We honored our volunteers who spend countless hours helping us operate--by processing library collections, transcribing letters, mailing membership packets, leading House and walking tours, maintaining the garden, and many other invaluable activities. To our volunteers past and present: Thank you! We cannot do what we do without you. Click here to view photos from the picnic on our blog.
