Donn Fendler to be Honored at MHS
Film Screening and Talk Co-Hosted by the Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America

Maine Boy Scouts in uniform will join us on Saturday, August 16, from 2:00 - 4:00pm to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Donn Fendler's harrowing and historic nine-day journey on and around Mt. Katahdin. The free, family-friendly event includes a screening of the "Lost on a Mountain in Maine" proof of concept short film, an excerpt from the documentary "Finding Donn Fendler," a conversation with Donn looking back on his experience three-quarters of a century later, and a book signing. Donn will be joined by filmmaker Ryan Cook. Refreshments will be served. Please come help us celebrate one of Maine's most beloved icons!

She'll share family anecdotes and inform guests about the newly digitized collections of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. DIGITAL HISTORY

Online Exhibit:

Waldoboro Fire Department's 175 Years
Gay Block Fire, Waldoboro, 1962
MMN #98777
Water Witch, Waldoboro, ca. 1838
MMN #100056

In 2013, Waldoboro was one of five municipal departments to earn a state Safety and Health Award for Public Employers. The timing was particularly nice considering that the fire department was also celebrating its 175th anniversary. While the town of Waldoboro was chartered in 1773, it began organized fire protection in 1838 with a volunteer department and a hand pump fire engine imported from England.

Many engines--and some major fires--later, a team consisting of the fire department, historical society, and public library got together to recount the department's history on Maine Memory. The result is this online exhibit.

SEEN AT MHS

Did you know that the Longfellow Garden has been maintained by the Longfellow Garden Club since 1924? Dedicated members, such as Imelda Schaefer and Sylvia Sowles (seen in these photos) have planned, planted, pruned, and otherwise cared for this special garden for 90 years. MHS is glad to have a partnership with the Longfellow Garden Club, and appreciates its members--past and present.
