MHS NEWS

This Week's Program Highlights
There is so much happening at MHS this week, and we hope you'll join us for some very exciting programs. On Tuesday at noon, we'll have a panel presentation on the 1924 Portland Tax Records (this ongoing project is now complete and online), with emphasis on using the records for historic home renovation. Our Summer Garden Series kicks off on Wednesday at 5:30pm with folk music duo Castlebay presenting a concert of 19th century ballads and songs from Maine. Thursday evening at the Portland Museum of Art you can participate in a discussion about the role of museums, led by MHS Executive Director Steve Bromage and PMA's Director of the Museum Mark Bessire. Read on for program listings.

Lost on a Mountain in Maine
comes to MHS in August
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Donn Fendler's
harrowing nine-day ordeal on Mt. Katahdin in 1939, and the attention he and his story have attracted in the decades since, MHS and the Pine Tree Council, Maine's chapter of the Boy Scouts of America, will host an afternoon with Donn and the filmmaker working to bring the story to the big screen.

Postcard Greetings from Vacationland
Maine postcard, ca. 1935 MMN# 66093
Woods Lake Picnic Grounds, Bridgton,
ca. 1938 MMN #66374

Hello from Vacationland! Visitors to Maine have long purchased picture postcards of iconic Maine scenes to send to family and friends, or to keep as mementos of their trip. In the 1930s and '40s, many of these likely originated with Tichnor Brothers, Inc., a Boston firm that produced U.S. postcards. The company sometimes used the same graphics or images for multiple states. Maine Memory contributor Boston Public Library owns about 25,000 Tichnor cards and has shared more than 300 on MMN.

THE BUZZ
Thank you to our visitors who provide meaningful feedback and reviews!
"Very cool museum. The price was right and it was a perfect stop over for some culture while in Portland. We arrived about 45 minutes before closing and had plenty of time to stare at old artifacts (like a jar for tooth powder...awesome) and read all the boards of historical information. They did a great job emphasizing the importance of local history and highlighting how it's relevant today. Very glad that we popped in and more people should check it out."

"Nice casual tour of Longfellow's boyhood home. Interesting and up-close unlike other historical home tours. Very personal feel. Came with my kids 12, 10 & 4 and it held the interest of the older ones no problem (the younger one simply enjoyed the free fan she was given)."
