MHS Members get discount tickets to Chamberlain--a Civil War Romance
Maine Historical Society has partnered with Maine State Music Theatre to offer a special discount to members. MHS members will receive 20% off tickets to see Chamberlain - A Civil War Romance playing June 25 - July 12 at Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick.
To take advantage of your membership discount call (207) 725-8769. Have your membership card handy and give the box office your MHS Member ID. Discount applies on shows playing June 25 through July 8 only. Chamberlain - A Civil War Romance debuted on the Maine State Music Theatre stage 18 years ago. For this season's updated version of the musical, the theatre enlisted the creative team from last year's Les Miserables to rework the complex and epic story of Civil War hero Joshua and his wife, Fanny. Against a backdrop of thrilling music, grand battle scenes, and a compelling romance, Chamberlain explores his heroic participation in the Battle of Gettysburg and his impact on the State of Maine. Don't miss the colossal stage sets, period costumes, and the true story of a life lived more than a hundred years ago yet still relevant today. Thank you for supporting MHS!

New exhibitions offer unique views of Portland, open June 27
Home: The Longfellow House and the Emergence of Portland uses the Wadsworth-Longfellow House as a prism to explore how Portland has grown and changed over more than 230 years. The exhibition features family belongings that tell the personal and yet universal story of how people live in their homes--including ways of heating, cooking, and plumbing--and how those functions evolved within Portland. The stories of the Wadsworth and Longfellow families and an ever-changing cast of neighbors on their block help explain how Portland has become the beloved, livable city we know today.
A Snapshot of Portland, 1924: The Taxman Cometh, in the Shettleworth Lecture Hall for July and August, celebrates the informal photographs taken by the tax assessor of every taxable building in Portland in 1924. These unique images were recently added to the Maine Memory Network, making them easily accessible to the public. The exhibition highlights a selection of these fascinating snapshots of Portland life-from its first "skyscrapers" to tenements, pool halls, and farms.
Remembering Our Visit: Souvenir China and Mementos of the Longfellow House, in the Showcase Gallery, features objects relating to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his boyhood home that demonstrates the poet's wide public appeal. Collecting souvenirs became popular in the late 1800s with the expansion of the railways and the rise of leisure time in the United States. Local dry goods, crockery, and glassware retailers commissioned pieces and made them available for those who wanted a keepsake of their visit to Portland and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House.

 | | MMN #7332 |
Of the 156 items related to baseball on Maine Memory, this photo of Maine's champion amateur baseball club for the 1887-88 season is the oldest. The club was sponsored by Holbrook and Hawes, a clothing, hat, and tailor shop in Skowhegan, which produced this publicity card.
If you join us on Saturday, June 21, at the Southern Maine Community College baseball field on Fort Road in South Portland, you can experience vintage ball from an even earlier era--the 1860s. Details on the third annual Vintage Base Ball Day are below.

Trade Catalogs

John J. Frye, Manufacturer of Agriculture Tools trade catalog, Portland, 1889
|
Trade catalogs, due to their ephemeral, commonplace nature, are frequently overlooked as sources of information on American industrial, manufacturing, and merchandising history. Trade catalog scholar Lawrence Romaine asserts, "If a complete history of American manufacture is ever to be compiled, American trade catalogs will unquestionably be one of the most valuable sources of material available." Maine Historical Society collects these publications and makes them available to researchers in the Brown Research Library.
