Summer Camps

Camp Winnebago truck 1940 MMN #7415
Going to summer camp in Maine used to mean one thing: an extended stay in a rural, nature-filled setting with bunk beds, camp counselors, and multiple outdoor activities. The sleep-away camps described in this online exhibit highlight many such offerings of yesteryear. Today, kids more often get sent to summer camps--multiple single-week sessions on diverse topics that providing stimulating learning and social opportunities. (And also provide childcare for working parents!)

Two summers ago, Maine Historical Society joined the growing list of organizations that offer such week-long camps by piloting a Junior Docent Camp for 4th-6th graders. It was a great success, culminating in tours of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House by the girls and boys who attended. We are pleased to bring that back this summer during the first week in August. See details below.

NEWS: 2014 JUNIOR DOCENT CAMP

Hey kids--ever wonder what life was like before video games? Looking for a chance to step back in time? Want to be a history detective? Then Junior Docent Camp at MHS is for you!

WHO: For students entering 4th-6th grades
WHEN: Monday, August 4 - Thursday, August 7: 9:00am-12:00pm, and Friday, August 8: 9:00am - 2:00pm

Participants in Junior Docent Camp will explore life in 18th and 19th century Portland and go behind the scenes of Maine's earliest historic house museum. The camp is based at the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, the boyhood home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, built in 1786. The mix of indoor and outdoor activities will include 19th century games, gardening, crafts, cooking, and story telling. We will learn how Henry and his siblings played, dined, studied, cleaned up, and even got into trouble!

With Timothy F. Garrity

Recently published as a journal article in Maine History, this talk is given by Mount Desert Island Historical Society Executive Director Tim Garrity, and earned the 2014 James Phinney Baxter Award for best article. While in popular memory "Maine is counted among the northern states most solidly supportive of the Union cause," not all Mainers supported the War. Many people in Down East Maine--overwhelmingly rural, native, and Protestant at the time--simply wanted to be left alone, and opposed the War largely for pragmatic reasons.

Free for MHS members; $5 for non-members. Buy tickets online now or at the door.
