Online Exhibit:

Northport Hotel, ca. 1900  MMN #98816
Given the severity of this winter, we thought you would appreciate a hearty dose of summertime history, courtesy of Penobscot Marine Museum, which just completed its second of two MMN grant-funded online exhibits.

Vacationing "rusticators" flooded into Maine in the last quarter of the 19th century, many arriving by train or steamer. Eventually, automobile use expanded and changed the tourist trade; some vacationers bought their own "cottages." This exhibit showcases Maine tourist destinations, their out-of-state visitors, and locals who interacted with them.
