As a violin prodigy in her early years to an older woman--mother of two--struggling financially, Skowhegan native Mary Elise Fellows White remained committed to music, writing, poetry, her extended family, and living a life that would matter and be remembered.

The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend  
Speaker: Glenn Frankel

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Glenn Frankel shines a spotlight on Portland native son and legendary filmmaker, John Ford, in this presentation on his new book. The Searchers offers a rich and nuanced anatomy of the classic John Wayne western, and the complex, true story about Indian captivity it was based on. Boston University Assistant Professor of Humanities and Rhetoric Kevin Stoehr, co-author of Ride, Boldly Ride: History of the American Western Movie, introduces Frankel.

The Irish of Portland, Maine: A History of Forest City Hibernians
Speaker: Matthew Jude Barker

The Irish have influenced the city of Portland since it was first established in the seventeenth century. Portland resident Matthew Jude Barker, genealogist and historian at the Maine Irish Heritage Center in Portland, talks about his new book, which explores the triumphs and challenges of Portland's Irish community prior to the twentieth century. A book signing and sale will follow the talk.
