Otis Falls Pulp & Paper Mill, Livermore Falls, ca. 1896 MMN #78670
The first pulp and paper mills in Maine were constructed in the Jay, Livermore, and Livermore Falls area. Alvin Record and Hugh J. Chisholm, prominent leaders in the industry, built four mills along the Androscoggin River--because of the waterpower that it provided.

THIS WEEK
Longfellow House MHS will close at 2pm on New Year's Eve and will be closed on New Year's Day.

Longfellow House Schedule

Last chance to visit the Longfellow House decorated for the holidays. Monday 10am - 5pm, last tour at 4pm; Tuesday 10am - 2pm, last tour at 1pm. The House will reopen for the 2014 season in May. 

Museum Schedule
Visit the exhibits with your family during this winter break.  This week we're open Monday 10am - 5pm, Tuesday 10am - 2pm, Friday and Saturday 10am - 5pm. Closed Sunday.

Bath Iron Works and the Farm Security Administration

Rachel Miller, former MHS staff member and current University of Michigan graduate student in American Studies, shares her research on Bath Iron Works. Based on a series of 1940s photographs, Miller's presentation tracks the Farm Security Administration's move from an anti-poverty focus to wartime mobilization, while simultaneously exploring how the Federal Government used photography to make an argument about the deserving poor.

Intro to MHS: Library Tour  

Tour Guide: Nicholas Noyes, Curator of Library Collections

This 45-minute tour of the Brown Research Library, fully renovated in 2009, takes participants throughout the first floor reading room and behind-the-scenes into the archive, normally closed to the public. Nick Noyes covers the history of the building, architectural details, the basics of doing research in the library, and even shares a few treasures from the collection. E-mail us to sign up.
