Santa Claus visits North School, Portland, ca. 1920 MMN# 6120

From the Solstice to Saturnalia, ancient peoples observed themes of light and winter, and some incorporated the use of evergreens in their rituals.

In America, the traditions came together as part of "Christmas" in the middle of the nineteenth century. The poem "A Visit from Saint Nicholas", Washington Irving stories, and Thomas Nast cartoons cemented the notion of the jolly man who gave presents. The evergreen--especially trees and wreaths--joined Santa and a tradition was born. The two images remain prominent, regardless of religious connection. View this online exhibit and explore images that tell the tale of Christmases past.
