Potato Import Protest, Presque Isle, 1982
MMN #11451
Vowing to stay until Christmas to get their demands met, a group of Aroostook County potato farmers filled the parking lot of the Presque Isle Agricultural Center on December 16, 1982, to protest the import of Canadian potatoes.

The Canadian potatoes were entering the Maine market at lower prices due to the value of the Canadian dollar. Protests also took place in Houlton and Mapleton. Eventually, the Maine Potato Council filed a petition against 350 shippers in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario. View this image online.
