Letter from Ambrose Crane about stolen slave, 1835
MMN #7345
The growing divide between North and South over the "slave question" rages through this letter, sent on this day in 1835. Floridian Ambrose Crane demands that Deacon Dowle, who allegedly assisted in the theft of Crane's slave, "return my property to me without delay or expense or I pledge you my word it shall cost you 3 times the value of the girl, besides I will advertise you and your confederates in the nefarous [sic] transaction in every state in the union."
