Online Exhibit:
The Great War and Armistice Day

Skowhegan Doughboys in France, 1918
MMN #7583

In 1938, Congress made November 11 a legal holiday, "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace." After World War II and the Korean Conflict, Congress, in 1954, changed November 11 to Veterans Day, to honor veterans of all wars.

The images in this online exhibit evoke some of the experiences of The Great War, the event that led to our present Veterans Day.

Carving a National Image: The Civil War Sculpture of Maine's Franklin Simmons

Speaker: Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.

In this illustrated lecture, State Historian Earle Shettleworth will illuminate the life and work of Maine born sculptor Franklin Simmons, for whom the Civil War was a major source of inspiration. Simmons' Civil War Monument in Lewiston may have been the first in the nation to use the popular motif of the standing soldier, though more elaborate war memorials by the sculptor are found in Portland and in Washington, D.C.
