November 2013
Issue #39
Message from the Board of Trustees Chair
Lendall Smith

Thanksgiving will be here soon. It's a nostalgic time of year when many of us yearn for the simple pleasures of celebrating the holidays with good friends and family.

The theme for this year's Celebrate the Season is "Home for the Holidays," and it's our chance to celebrate the joys of home with you. It opens the day after Thanksgiving--so instead of braving the crowds shopping, why not bring your family to learn how Maine people have crafted their own holiday traditions?

And speaking of Thanksgiving, I am delighted to have this opportunity--as the new MHS Board Chair--to thank all of you for your support of our work.  We are grateful for your help and value your interest in everything we do.

Col. Charles W. Tilden of Castine

Col. Tilden, ca. 1863
MMN# 4295

Col. Charles W. Tilden (1832-1914), of Castine, enlisted in May 1861 as first lieutenant in Co. B of the 2nd Maine Volunteers. He eventually joined the ranks of the 16th Maine Infantry and was promoted to colonel in July 1863.

Soldiers in the 16th Maine knew they were about to be overtaken by Confederate troops on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg. To prevent their flags from being captured, they tore them in pieces and hid the pieces on themselves.

Tilden saved several fragments, even while imprisoned at Libby Prison. He protected the flag piece seen above by hiding it in his mouth.

He sent it to Lieutenant Francis Wiggin in 1914, and wrote that the flag pieces were "not to be surrendered to any one, friend or foe."

Online Exhibit: Hunting Season
Ragged Lake, 1887 MMN #1024
For many Mainers, late fall means rising before dawn, donning bright orange, and heading into the woods to track deer. Historically, Maine's ample woods provided numerous game animals and birds for hunters seeking food, fur, or hides. Toward the end of the 19th century, however, the promotion of hunting as recreation for tourists, and concerns about conservation, changed the nature of hunting in Maine. Wrapping up the Wadsworth-Longfellow House Tour Season

Guests visit the WLH

Since May, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House has had much activity, hosting guests from far reaches of the globe including Sri Lanka, India, Australia, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain, and all across the U.S. Many schoolchildren visited, and enjoyed learning about the poet when he was a child. We offered special tours for groups including Seeds of Peace, the MFA Boston, Downeast Adult Services, and the Walpole Society. We collaborated with the Longfellow Garden Club to bring other garden clubs to tour our campus. This summer a film crew from Japan came to the House and filmed for a Portland tourism segment, which will air on Japanese television. As always, our guides and docents made this season a success! But don't take our word for it, here are a few notes from our visitors via TripAdvisor.

"The guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and he made the house come alive." - Guest from Ann Arbor, Michigan (October 2013)

"A worthwhile, hour-long tour by dedicated staff who truly seemed proud of their role in educating others about one of our nation's greatest poets." - Guest from Murray, Kentucky (September 2013)

"Our tour guide was funny, knowledgeable, and well-spoken. I'm not a great fan of American literature, but she really peaked my interest in revisiting Longfellow's works." - Guest from Fountain, Colorado (August 2013)

Tours are offered in November on Saturdays only with limited hours; holiday tours begin on November 29 and end on New Year's Eve. The House will open for the 2014 season on May 1.

Indiana University-Bloomington Professor of English Christoph Irmscher, author of two books on Longfellow (Longfellow Redux and Public Poet, Private Man), returns to MHS to deliver a talk on his most recent book, Louis Agassiz: Creator of American Science. A Longfellow contemporary, Agassiz bridged the gap between specialist and amateur in 19th century America, changing ordinary people's relationship with science forever. But he also
held racist viewpoints that led Americans to expect scientists to comment on race policy. Details.

"Snow Train", Waterville, 1946  MMN# 42248
"Let's take a ride on the Snow Train ... Where we'll have fun to-day
Let's take a ride on the Snow Train, to mountains far a-way
Let's take a day to be hap-py ... Where all the crowd is gay
We will go up where the snow-peaks, Will thrill us while we play ..."

Our latest lecture hall gallery exhibit is now on display, Dear Old Maine, I'm Coming Back: Home & Hearth Reflected In the Maine Historical Society Sheet Music Collection.

This collection of eye-catching sheet music cover art contains a recurrent theme of Maine and New England as a place to come home to, a place of nostalgia--no matter how far one roams. Whether keeping warm inside by the hearth, or outside enjoying winter scenery, Maine, for many, embodies the idea of winter being a time to return to family roots, and the familiar scenes and traditions of youth.
