Artist Rockwell Kent spent five years, 1905-1910, on Monhegan Island painting the landscape. The resulting work helped established his reputation as an early American modernist. He also designed bookplates, and his modernist style clearly is evident in this example. The Latin quotation, from Pliny, reads: "See through literature the deliverance from mortality."

This is one of a number of bookplates being uploaded to Maine Memory by a new contributor, the Cary Memorial Library in Wayne. The library owns a massive bookplate collection--some 3,500 pieces--that was started during the 1920s to honor Wayne native Annie Louise Cary, a famous opera singer. View this image online.
