Old Orchard Beach probably has more name recognition than any other Maine beach. In addition to being a top tourist spot, its miles of flat, sandy shoreline also happen to be ideal, once upon a time, as a substitute for traditional runways. On this day in 1927, the Pride of Detroit took off from Old Orchard Beach in an attempt to make the first around the world flight. Find out what happened by reading more here.
