Looking Out: Maine's Fire Towers
| | Center Mountain lookout tower, ca. 1920 MMN #19113 |
While it's hard to find much fault with summer, one of the hazards of the season is the combination of hot and dry conditions that increase the chance for forest fires--as we've seen all too clearly from the recent devastating fires out west. Maine has recorded many firsts in fire prevention, beginning with an 1891 law that created a state forest commissioner and local fire wardens. But perhaps the most celebrated "first" was the construction, in 1905, of the first fire tower. Click here to learn about the history of these crucial structures in the state in this Maine History Online exhibit.

Wednesday, July 17, 5:30pm
Location: Longfellow Garden in front of the Brown Library
The six-piece Serenade Band, part of Portland's Centennial Brass Band recreating a group active from 1850-1875, kicks off our summer Longfellow Garden Series. They will play Civil War era music on period horns in honor of the War's Sesquicentennial, and the opening of our museum exhibit, This Rebellion. Bandmaster Jon Hall will give a historical narrative between selections, talking about the role of music in that era, and during the Civil War in particular.
Join us for this special treat along the walkway in front of the Brown Library. Light refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited and is first-come, first-served. In case of rain, the event moves to the lecture hall.
