Historical Image:
Skowhegan Base Ball Club, 1887-88 Season
 | | MMN #7332 |
Take me out to the ballgame... Although some of us having been singing that since April, summer is baseball's true season. Fittingly, we are kicking off our summer programming with a truly "historic" pair of baseball games on Saturday, June 22, at Southern Maine Community College's Fort Road field. Check out the details below.
Meanwhile, take a closer look at this Skowhegan Base Ball Club team photo. (Their "season" apparently straddled two calendar years.) The forearms on the men in the back row are impressive--an indication that they were in shape for catching the ball without a glove, which was indeed a 19th century rule.

Vintage Baseball Games at SMCC Athletic Fields, Fort Road, South Portland
Presented by MHS, Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society, and South Portland Historical Society
Join us for vintage baseball games played according to the rules and customs of the 1860s. The teams are the Essex Base Ball Club of Massachusetts versus the Dirigo Vintage Base Ball Club of Augusta. These clubs were founded by people who love to play the game, and have a passion for baseball's compelling history.
Between games, spectators and families will have the opportunity to interact with players and ask questions. Bring a picnic, some chairs, and your friends for a fun afternoon!
Thanks to our sponsors Investment Management & Consulting Group and residential broker John Babin of Coldwell Banker.
