Notes from the Director
Stephen Bromage
We are thrilled to be holding Maine Historical Society's 191st Annual Meeting in Biddeford this Saturday, and to welcome Colin Woodard as our keynote speaker. I hope we'll see many of you there!
The Annual Meeting is an important part of MHS. It is focused on our members, and is the moment they come together for updates on all aspects of the organization, including the election of Trustees (voted by the members); to vote on current business (including updated bylaws this year); and, to recognize volunteers, trustees, and historians who have made an impact. Click to continue reading Steve's remarks.

Online Exhibit: Friendship's Historic Jameson & Wotton Wharf
 | |
Davis Point, Friendship, ca.1920 MMN #80339
|
The Maine Memory Network grant program--funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services--completed its last grant cycle in April. Thirteen organizations received funds to digitize and add items from their collections to Maine Memory, and another 28 were awarded online exhibit grants. Many of these projects have been in partnership with other organizations in the community, thus far extending the reach of the awards.
An example is this new exhibit by the Friendship Museum, who partnered with the Friendship Village School. Museum members worked with students to scan and catalog more than one hundred items, and wrote the essay for this exhibit on the village's historic Jameson & Wotton Wharf. More than just a structure jutting into the water, the wharf has functioned as a center of economy, transportation, tourism, and social life for the small village over the years. Click on the image to view it online.
We congratulate all the grantees. You have enriched Maine Memory in innumerable ways!

MHS News
New exhibit, This Rebellion: Maine and the Civil War, opens 6/28
Our new museum exhibit opens to members on June 27, at a reception from 5-7pm, and to the general public on June 28. This Rebellion showcases the rich array of our Civil War collections as it tells the story of individual soldiers and others involved in the War. The exhibit is on display through through May 26, 2014.
The exhibit features battlefield relics, uniforms, documents, letters, photographs, and evidence of post-war commemorative activities in 13 different sections--among them "Running the War," "Caring for the Sick & Wounded," "The Homefront," and "Remembering." In addition, the exhibit features a Memorial Wall of more than 8,000 names of members of Maine regiments who were killed or died during the War. Click for more information.
Civil War Trail
The exhibit is a stop on the new 22-site Maine Civil War Trail, which opened this spring, and is overseen by the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum. The Trail features stops along the coast from Saco to Castine; inland from Bangor to Augusta; and in the western part of the state as well. Each museum or historic site on the trail has planned special Civil War themed exhibits during 2013-2014.
