John Bapst Prom Dance Ticket, Bangor, 1953

MMN #35372

Commencement is a formal term for the process of graduation. While it literally means "the beginning of something," the gravity of the word suggests the opposite. Given that seniors are ending one chapter of their lives to start another, that's as it should be.

One of the hallmarks of the end of the high school senior's year is the prom. This wrist dance card from John Bapst High School dates to exactly 60 years ago today, when it was still a Catholic institution (it became a non-sectarian private school in 1980).

The card is one of many pieces of ephemera from this online exhibit on the history of John Bapst.
