Spotlight On

Vintage Maine Images Volunteers
Sofia, Mike, and Dani

This winter as we prepared to launch our redesigned website Vintage Maine Images, our Image Services & Design Coordinator Dani Fazio assembled a team of six volunteers who came in weekly to assist her with new branding and design, social media, marketing, exhibit organization and production, community outreach, and launch party planning.

We would like to acknowledge the role each volunteer played in helping to make the launch party and new brand a success. Each person brought energy and enthusiasm to their work, contributed specialized skills, and did this while working or attending college.

Sofia Yalouris - exhibit organization, production, event host
Mike Hilleary - exhibit organization, event planning, marketing
Matt-Austin Coffey - event marketing and outreach, data support
Cecilia Ziko - graphic design and branding
Mary Holt - product research, social media, event DJ
Anastasia Azenaro-Moore - social media

Since February, these volunteers have put in 198 hours--a tremendous gift.  THANK YOU!

Wadsworth-Longfellow House, Portland, ca. 1920

MMN #11697
The Wadsworth-Longfellow House is once again open for the season! Note the new hours posted in this issue. Whether you've never been on a tour, or taken several, we invite you to visit us this spring and summer. Be sure to spend some time in the Longfellow Garden behind the house, a hidden gem in downtown Portland.

There's something special about a historic house in a modern city. If the walls of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House could talk, imagine what they'd say about the changes they've seen. While this ca. 1920 image doesn't look so different from today in some ways -- the house is largely the same, the gate remains, passersby and cars still congregate along the street -- much has changed. The elms succumbed to disease and were replaced by flowering trees, the library has been renovated, and the MHS administration building is now located to the left of the house. And that's just on one street corner. We live in a city, a state, a world that would be entirely foreign to our ancestors if they were to return for a tour.

Fortunately, we have great images like this one to keep their world in mind as change continues.

MHS News

Maine Historical Society is pleased to announce the redesign and launch of our website Vintage Maine Images. Originally built in 2004, the site serves as a way to sell images from Maine Memory Network. It's been redesigned for improved ease of use, and has a modern new look.

Vintage Maine Images (VMI) is a shopping web site offering reproductions of more than 21,000 historical Maine images. VMI provides products for a range of uses including home and office décor, gifts, publications, and more.

We celebrated this milestone last Friday with a launch party and the opening of the exhibit Vintage Maine Images: A Website Comes to Life (through June 23, 2013, lecture hall).

Summer Camps in Maine

Pamphlet #5047
Maine Historical Society has a large collection of pamphlets about camps in Maine, especially those that were founded in the early 20th century (many of which exist today). You can find these by searching our online catalog for "Camps - Maine."

Notes from the Archives
Back in March, while I looked out the window onto the Longfellow Garden and saw only mud and snow, inside my office a collection of Maine summer camps pamphlets came across my desk, and my world was suddenly full of sunshine, warmth, and visions of young campers enjoying lakeside adventures. Now that we are on the cusp of summertime, those images are once again close to reality...
