Digital History: Stories from Maine Memory Network

Historical Image:
Stereoview of Main Street, Springvale, 1888

MMN #22153
Without question, this has been a snowy winter. But this season's storms--even Nemo--pale in comparison to the Great Blizzard of 1888 which dumped between 40 and 50 inches on parts of the eastern seaboard and shut down virtually everything from the Chesapeake Bay to Maine,  including the telegraph system.

Also known as the "Great White Hurricane," the blizzard lasted from March 11 to March 14. This image, the right side of a stereoview, was taken on March 12. It is one of a staggering 550 items contributed to Maine Memory by the Sanford Historical Committee, a longtime Contributing Partner to the Network.

To see more from Sanford--everything from a visit by President Taft and marching bands to  homes, businesses, and formal portraits--visit this search page on Maine Memory.
