Digital History: Stories from Maine Memory Network

1971 World Cup Parade of Nations. MMN #76151
Sugarloaf -- a small ski area by European standards -- entered ski racing history in 1971 by hosting an event that was part of the World Cup Alpine Ski Championships. The "Tall Timber Classic," as the event was known, had a decidedly Maine flavor.

Thirteen countries sent racers to compete at Sugarloaf. This image shows the "Parade of Nations" at the beginning of the opening ceremonies. The signs with the nation's names are being carried by young members of the Sugarloaf Junior Ski Racing Competition Program. Represented were USA, Canada, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Norway, Poland, Brazil, Great Britain, Lichtenstein, and Australia.

We hope you'll join us tomorrow at noon for a presentation by the Ski Museum of Maine about this event and ski racing history in general in the state.
