Digital History: Stories from Maine Memory Network
| | MMN# 10829 Contributed by the Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library |
Among other accomplishments, Maine Senator Edmund Muskie is known for championing environmental causes. The fruits of his labor are on display in this signing ceremony for the Clean Air Act 49 years ago today. The 1963 act established a research program, which expanded in 1967. Amendments in 1970, 1977, and 1990 required increasingly greater regulatory controls for air pollution. To learn more about Muskie's role in helping create the environmental protections we live by today, visit Clean Water: Muskie and the Environment on Maine Memory.

Renowned pianist David Maxwell will play the Chickering piano during tours of the Longfellow House. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow purchased the Chickering square grand piano in 1843, directly from its builder, Jonas Chickering. Music in the House has become a tradition at MHS, and we hope you'll join us.
