Digital History: Stories from Maine Memory Network

MMN# 57277
Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days and nights, commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah began on Saturday evening and lasts through the 16th.

This 1991 cover of Salt, the magazine of The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, was taken at Etz Chaim synagogue, and is one of the many evocative images in a recently created exhibit on Maine Memory, The Jews of Maine. The exhibit, which reminds us how rich and widespread Jewish history is in Maine, features these sections: Changing Landscape of Jewish Groups, Jewish Cultural Contributions, Preserving Traditions and Culture, Jews and Occupations, and Experiences of Teenagers.

From all of us at Maine Historical Society, Happy Hanukkah!

This Week

Tintypes - Blacksmithing - Silhouette Cutting - Book Binding -
Wood Carving - Oil Painting - Wool Spinning
Join us for an open house celebrating traditional arts in Maine. Artists and craftspeople will be demonstrating their work in the Longfellow House and Garden, the Brown Library, and the Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. Lecture Hall.

Artists include: spinner Judy Warde of Cape Elizabeth; portrait artist and silhouette cutter Ruth Monsell of Damariscotta; bookbinder Martha Kearsley of Portland; photographer Cole Caswell of Peaks Island; oil painter Timothy Wilson of Portland; blacksmith Sam Smith of Winn; and woodcarvers James Irish, Thon Palmer, Robert Perry, and Norma Wing, of the Maine Woodcarvers Association.

Admission: $5. Includes Arts Showcase, and entrance to the Museum and Longfellow House. Great fun for the whole family!

Renowned pianist David Maxwell will play the Chickering piano during tours of the Longfellow House. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow purchased the Chickering square grand piano in 1843, directly from its builder, Jonas Chickering. Music in the House has become a tradition at MHS, and we hope you'll join us. Also offered on Saturday, December 22 from 1-3pm.
