Summer in downtown Santa Cruz is when the small-town feeling that occupies Santa Cruz most of the year gives way to a feeling of more expansive breadth and reach. Over the last months, we've seen people from all over the world--including exchange students from Santa Cruz's Sister Cities competing in downtown scavenger hunts, world-class musicians and music lovers in town for the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and tourists, who come back to Santa Cruz year after year to soak in Santa Cruz's way of life. For many, Bookshop becomes their summer bookstore home; different from their beloved hometown bookstore, but just as appreciated. Their reading habits don't have to be put on hold while they are away, and we, in turn, get to hear what visitors love about their hometown bookstores and how their bookstores impact their communities.

In the past few years, however, we've heard from many more tourists who thank us for being here because there are no more bookstores left in their hometowns. They have to rely on summer vacations to get the local bookstore experience. It's difficult to imagine, and just one more reason that we are grateful, every day, for the support we get from our community year-round. We wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Happy reading!

end of night The End of Night

by Paul Bogard
You might not realize how much you're missing in the night sky until you go somewhere that is truly dark. In the U.S., 3/4 of the population live in places so brightly lit, their eyes never switch to night vision. Paul Bogard's The End of Night is a fascinating book that blends science and nature writing, memoir and travelogue. If you care at all about the stars, this is the book for you. --Kat

one summer One Summer: America 1927
by Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson has written an autobiography of a year: 1927. Always a master of narration, Bryson makes this year alive and fascinating-Lindbergh flies the Atlantic, Babe Ruth hits 60 homers, and the United States takes its place as a power in the world. Filled with rich details of many iconic events, Bryson has delivered an entertaining and worthwhile read. --Neal

my notorious life My Notorious Life
by Kate Manning
I was swept away by Axie's charm--add her to the list of much-loved plucky orphan narrators. Manning paints a wonderfully vivid portrait of Victorian New York City, the perils that life held for women with limited access to contraceptives and medical care, and the particular vehement retribution that can be aimed at a woman who dares break the "rules." --Nici
