Another Major Policy Win!
On Monday, November 5th 2012 the BC Government announced it is establishing a new structure to handle tourism marketing in the province. Destination BC will be a new industry-led crown corporation which will work directly with tourism sector professionals to market the province as a tourism destination. It will ultimately have protected funding through a legislature-based formula.
The creation of Destination BC is another direct policy success for the Chamber of Commerce network in BC and a feather in the cap for the Penticton Chamber. The policy Predictability for Provincial and Regional Destination Marketing Organizations, was written and submitted by Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce and adopted as a policy statement by the BC Chamber network in 2010.
The policy contained several recommendations which are being implemented in Destination BC such as a minimum set funding, a performance-based formula protected through legislation, and ensuring that the executive leadership of the organization be comprised of a majority of independent tourism professionals.
Destination BC will be formally created on April 1, 2013 with an initial budget of $48.87 million which will convert to a percentage of industry revenue starting the following year.
