Global currents...
Books in the Orca Currents series are doing well around the world. Just this week we signed foreign rights agreements for two titles (Disconnect by Lois Peterson and Out of Season by Kari Jones) for translation in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Hungary.

Have story. Will travel.
Love is in the air...
Just read a wonderful blog post from a librarian professing undying love for our Orca Soundings series. We blushed! And she even has a pet name for the books: O-Sound (sounds like a boy band!)

Jen C is a high school librarian in South Carolina and in her blog post, addressed to the Soundings, she writes:

"I've loved you for awhile now but can no longer resist publicly professing my love by blog...you're smart and cunning. You find topics any kids can relate to. Before the reader even knows what hit him, he's turning the last page -  he decides to read another and then it's a full-on love affair with O-Sound.
So, thank you, O-Sound. Thank you for understanding those kids who HATE or STRUGGLE to read. You are the John Green/Sarah Dessen of some of my kids' worlds. XOXO."

Take that, Fifty Shades.

10 Year Banner
Ten years on...
And speaking of Orca Soundings (and love), this year marks the tenth anniversary of the series. With 85 titles in print and 1.3 million copies in the hands of our ardent admirers, the series can be called an unqualified success.
The books, written for teens reading below level, are everywhere and have been translated into French, Spanish, German, Swedish, Norwegian and more, and are available as ebooks and as audio.

Reel 'em in...
Orca is putting together another webinar with Saddleback Educational Publishing and ALA's Booklist magazine to help you connect with striving and struggling readers. The last couple of webinars were very popular and this one looks to be as well.

Some details:
Teachers and librarians are always looking for new ways to connect with children and teens categorized as "reluctant readers." In this free, hour-long webinar, a reading specialist and literacy coach - along with representatives from Orca and Saddleback - will discuss strategies and resources effective in reaching struggling readers ages 10 and up. Moderated by Booklist Books for Youth associate editor Ann Kelley.

Have a question about "reluctant readers"? Please email  hiloquestions@orcabook.com before Sept 24 and we will attempt to answer your query in the webinar. Questions addressed during the webinar will receive a sampling of current titles valued at $100.

A new year of Text2Reader...
T2R Logo
The newest issue of Text2Reader is now online.

The September issue of Text2Reader gets students thinking. They'll explore issues surrounding gambling addiction after reading On The Turn, a graphic novel produced by the Healthy Aboriginal Network. With a fiction passage from Catherine Austen's award-winning All Good Children, students will weigh the advantages of a futuristic society that limits personal freedoms - but provides guaranteed security. Non-fiction selections will get them talking about environmental disasters caused by human reliance on the chemicals of a post-industrial age. And in this month's Digital Nation, students get to the bottom of how that nebulous "cloud" really works. If that's not enough, September's T2R also shows students how to power up their writing by ramping up the tension, teaches them how to ask good questions, and takes them through the steps to writing a killer script.

Text2Reader is a Language Arts program for grades 6 to 8. Using selections from bestselling books, Text2Reader is developed by teachers and is correlated to the English Language Arts curriculum.  LearnNowBC, BC's distributed learning platform now hosts Text2Reader and makes the program available to BC schools at a substantial discount. Details here.
